Often on the forum when discussing the merits of a particular lens I've seen the phrase. "It has that classic Pentax rendering".

What does that mean ?

Cheers,

I use the older Pentax A20 with film and can confirm it really is a cracking lens. Don't tend to use it on digital though as the 16-45 covers that focal length and is so good.

There is a pretty good description of the crippled mount on Bojidar Dimitrov's site:

Back to the original post for a moment.

When Canon took the decision to make the EOS mount incompatible with the older FD lenses that was it as far as long term value was concerned for their older bodies and lenses. Same thing for Minolta and their change from the MC/MD mount to their A series mount.

Now look at Pentax and Nikon. A much better approach when they moved from manual focus to auto focus by ensuring people with fantastic old glass could still use it on the latest bodies. Perhaps the original Pentax - K and Nikon - F mounts were much better by design in the first place and allowed for this upgrade path when it became clear users wanted auto focus. Or perhaps the marketing men saw a golden opportunity to force people to dump their old glass and buy new. I do not know. What I do know is I am very grateful I can take a 30 year old lens and use it either on one of my film bodies or the K10D.

The only fly in the ointment as I see it was the crippling of the K mount, so I am forced to use the stop down metering work around, which as has been discussed at length on the forum and does not always work that well. Still I am hopeful in some future camera body this matter will be resolved, either by restoring the full mount or making stop down metering more accurate.

Just my opinion.

Hi Ken,

I've been thinking about a Minolta III meter for some time, funnily enough as a replacement for my dead Weston. What model do you use ?
I'd only want to use it for ambient light readings when using a... dare I say it... Mamiya 645. It will only be for occasional use so I want something cheap, very easy to read, but accurate so I don't waste lots of Velvia 50 unnecessarily.

Its been years since I last used that camera, so I'm hoping it will be fun dusting it off again.

Cheers,

/Ian

A top 5, for me an impossible task. Here are a few favourites, but there are so many more missing from this list...

2112 - Rush
Close to the edge - Yes
Argus - Wishbone Ash
Let it bleed - The Rolling Stones
Wish you were here - Pink Floyd

And there are at least another 50 albums I really love.

Off to see Jethro Tull play over here in a couple of months time.

Cheers,

/Ian (a fan of Pentax and 70s rock music.)

I read that next week a Scottish beer called "Tactical Nuclear Penguin" goes on sale here in Sweden. At 540kr (ca £47) for a 33cl bottle I will not be sampling it, despite it being the worlds strongest beer. At 32% you Scots have a strange definition of beer. I'd call it rocket fuel.

Cheers,
