I find this quite helpful in determining how good the "resolution" of whites and blacks is.

Ideally you would see the ones in the black and the white area (here at work I can see the white 1 and black 3 (but it's depending on ambient light, of course)).

My entry this week is an older image from 2006. I still think it is one of my best pics from Warnemuende. If you want to see some more shots of Warnemuende taken in the last 2.5 years, here's a Picasa WEB album:

Great shot, Lilly.
And the cropping suggestion seems to work nicely (I'm always hesitant to chop at peoples heads but in photography it can have positive effects). Scrolling down a bit I concur that a bit more cropping would work even better.

Congrats Mike, well deserved (whether it is leaning or not, I may add).

Great entries again and thanks McBrian for judging (though I would have liked the judgements to be in order of submission so that one can scroll along the pictures in another tab when reading the critiques).

On to street furniture then, hmmm....

Ok, I won't comment on the cars...

I think you need to pay more attention to the light. Look at #1,3 and 4: The cars are waay too dark. It's hard to see that bug (or spider or whatever) on the blue car (in fact it only registered with me in the last pic). Bracketing shots and/or ND grad filters have been mentioned. Getting the sun behind you when shooting might help as well.

As Lilly said, going down low is perhaps a good idea.

I like #5 but would crop out the blown sky.

Best way to learn how to do it: Get some brochures or look at WEB sites from car manufacturers. They spend a lot of money for professional photographers who make their products look good. Don't be afraid to look at WEB sites of manufacturers that you don't think of as cool (we won't tell your mates that you visited their WEB sites )

Look at the photos you like. Think about what makes you like the shot, where might the light sources be, what might the light sources be, how many did they use etc. pp.
That will teach you a lot I would guess.

Very good images - And very good use of the fishy!! I really like those.

Just a note. Last one- is it a bit off center or just me? Was that made on purpose?
Yes and no. Yes, I wanted it to be off center but slightly different. Difficult to look through the viewfinder, though, with the camera on the tripod and pointing upwards. Seems that there is a purpose for the existence of live view after all (not that I can think of many uses; guess when you get used to it you find more along the way).

And this shot being off centre does slightly irritate the viewer and (I hope) keeps the attention for just a bit longer.

Thanks for your replies!

I will show them the shots (as I said, I'm organizing a workshop that will be held there). As it is a new venue but not that new (about 2 years) I guess they will have some shots already. But it can't do any harm...

It's interesting that the 10-17 gives some useful architecture shots. Not the kind of lens that springs to mind when you hear "architecture shots". I guess it's a matter of putting the odd shot in, not overdoing it.

Thanks for looking,
Prieni
