Prieni - Were you hoping to miss out on top spot by not entering your lighthouse image you've showed off in the other section? Not saying it would definately have won but certainly worthy of a cigar!!!

Will
Thanks Will, maybe I picked the wrong entry then
But, I thought that the one I did enter would be more fitting for the theme. It's all subjective anyway and I take part in this competitions in the Olympic spirit. All great fun and good to see so many different approaches to a theme.

I don't regret my choice.

Cheers,
Prieni

Prieni – Nice sky and good use of a polariser to help reduce the glare and boost the contrast. Technically the exposure is bang on and I like the way that the lines of the cloud formations lead you into the shot – but where do they lead you to? It could just do with a single focal point to linger on – a yacht of cruise ship in the distance would do nicely!

Will, that would have been nice to have some focal point. Problem was, this area of the Pacific, namely the Lau basin, seemed to be void of anything. I didn't see a single dolphin or fish for the whole four weeks, would you believe. We saw one ship, a Japanese research vessel, but it was quite far away (and at the time the sky wasn't interesting at all).

Thanks for judging a competition with a lot of entries!

Congrats Tony, well done!

I like promhandicams entry, just hit's the nail on the head!

I wonder if it was taken for the theme...

Great shot!

Yes, honestly I can, or rather 170/2 degrees. If I turn the monitor 170 degrees, I would look at the rear side, wouldn't I?
That is exactly the point I was trying to make. It is "only" 178/2 degrees (86 that is) viewing angle.

My Samsung Syncmaster 173T has a viewing angle of 178x178 degrees, which means I can see the picture from any practical angle.
That's amazing: You can turn your monitor 170 degrees and still see a picture : (Don't you love it how this nonsensical definitions make it into everyday use and we don't think about it anymore? Of course I know what is meant by the 178 degree claim.)

BTW: I have a Samsung 171P (with P as in Porsche!) which I'm very happy with.

I can see black from 2+ and White from 2+ so I'm only missing a little bit which is not too bad for a laptop.

Brightness and contrast are not the only things you need to adjust. You need to use the advanced colour features of your graphics card to asjust output brightness, contrast and gamma for each individual channel or use a calibration tool.
I think we can all agree on a calibration tool being the best choice. This single test chart certainly only gives an indication and is not a full diagnosis tool.

Probably they are. You have to spend a very large amount of money to get a really good flat screen monitor.

LCD and Plasma TVs are not always that brilliant either...
Yes, that's right. I should have phrased "Do you mean that LCD's are so much worse?"
And there seem to be quite huge differences:

I can see all numbers 1 to 8 white and black on my macbook 13" lcd screen.

The left half is completely black on my monitor but I can see all of the numbers on the right (white) side.

At work, on a monitor set up for CAD, I could not work out what you were talking about Exclamation

At home I can see White 1 and Black 3.

Don't panic to fast. I checked this chart on my screen and it differs with the same kind of chart the spyder software is showing me after calibration. Was the chart brought out in a time crt's were common use?
If so......,it has no point in using it on the newer lcd's. Not to mention the new backlight lcd screens. I use the latter and the chart shown by the spyder software shows me all shades. from the deepest black to the absolute whites. On the chart in this topic i only can't see the black 1 & 2.
I think i trust my Spyder software, and forget about all the others.
Martin.
Martin, that's what I would do (if I would own a calibration tool).
I don't know when this pic was created, looking at the rgb-values of the numbers, they are (all three allways same, of course. w: white, b: black)
1: w252 b4
2: w249 b7
3: w246 b11
Regardless of the technology (CRT/LCD) these changes should be perceptible (at least for #3), shouldn't they? Why would you think to see a change on your CRT but not on the LCD? Do you mean that LCD's are worse than CRTs?

Hi Prieni,
What happened there on your Hawaii entry. Did a elephant flew over and take a big dump, while you were enjoying the scene
i am very glad he missed you
Martin.
You are only half as glad as I am! That could have been rather unpleasant...

I thought of submitting this one but decided against it as there is no street to be seen...

I would have pruned it to be within the 800 pixel limit, of course. (I have to admit that I was tempted to make this weeks entry 801 pixels wide )
