I bought into Pentax with the K-7, which I chose over all sorts of others with similar specs only because it is sturdy - durable, made of metal. And I'm a clumsy bugger. Was the right choice, I dropped the damm thing soon after. Since then the main attraction has been all the old lenses.

My gut feel would be that actually this forum is pretty steady and if anything getting a little stronger? The world isn't short of other photography forums either - I flit between several depending on my mood and my needs. And sometimes I just abandon photography with a latest greatest project but then come back when that's completed. I really don't think it's the case that Pentax people are disappearing in throngs - it's just unavoidable churn.

What Gwen said. Slavish devotion to a brand over and beyond you, the actual user, is frankly dim and bizarre. Pentax is a profitmaking self-interested company, if they make a stupid or bad product they deserve to be punished with no sales. Otherwise they can just churn out any old crap.

Anyone have a handle on how this might change the Pentax presence in the UK? From what I gather, Ricoh's camera marketing division operates out of Dusseldorf. Which seems a tad remote from Blighty, some boots on the ground and some proper, localised marketing would surely be preferable to diktats from a remote EMEA ops centre?

I can't remember a greater rate of change in how we achieve the photography that we achieve than in the last 10 years, but I'd have to say that most of that is due to some form of computer programming rather than different hardware design.

Moore's Law sure has interesting ramifications for photography. Surely in 5 years time it's possible to conceive that most people will instead be shooting a 5 second 4928x3264 vid, picking the best frame, enhancing, cropping and uploading/emailing in camera. That sort of scenario really can't be far away.

One problem, that whole slowness of EVF needs a new generation solution before that changes at all levels, especially where timing matters. HDMI has a lag of about 1/4-1/2 second.

I was discussing the Q with someone this evening and he pointed out that the missing killer app with nearly all these compact cameras, given their typical usage, is connectivity. On a mobile phone, one click take the picture and pretty well one more click lands the picture on a website. No nearly so easy with a camera, though it should be, I think. So I hope one of the first add-ons Pentax produce for the Q is a wifi connector for the hotshoe, and a connector that will upload direct to the net and not only transfer files to a PC. Perhaps Pentax have missed a trick by not building this in from the get-go. It might produce more sales than k adapter mounts and the like.
Agreed, I think it's the most obvious omission.

Other than that, smart, revolutionary, future-proof product which raises the bar and actually has a good USP rather than being a clone of everyone else's efforts. Well done Pentax
