Have you seen the size of the sensor?

1/2.3"

My little Sony TX-5 has a 1/2.4" sensor, so the Pentax Q sensr is only sightly bigger. The TX-5 is 10.2MP whil the Q is 12.4MP

Just to give some perspective on sensor size ...

You can almost smell the Political Correct fanboy reviews giving the usual spiel about it being a good contender for the market it's intended for and other such subtanceless and ineffectual waffle.

Personal I think given the price and ridiculously small sensor, this camera is a FAIL. Should have had at least a 4/3rds sensor IMO.

How is 1.23 bigger than 1.24???
I obviously don't understand how sensor size is worked out

It's 1/2.3 as opposed to 1/2.4 (Which is less than half a percent difference, but the point still stands.)

Like Tony M says it's a 'fraction'. just like a 1/2 is bigger than a 1/4

Not sure about this one. The New Sony CSC has the same basic sensor as the K5 which as we know is fantastic. In the pic the sensor looks tiny and that means it may not compete on IQ. This appears to be a point and shoot sensor camera with interchangable lenses and manual controls. I wonder if Pentax will bring out a canera to compete with the Panasonic, Olympus, Sony CSC models with a K mount to take advantage of the ltd pancake lenses??

Interesting, and if this report is accurate some interesting lenses as well. I shall reserve judgement until it actually appears.

Just had a look at the lenses as well. 5 of them- 2 of them designated "toy" lenses and a fisheye- 60% of the lenses at launch are very niche. Questionable marketing regardless of how good or bad the kit is

WE now have a more detailed article:

I'm sold on the concept, and the wallet is already starting to squeal.

Well from my perspective it all looks very odd - lenses designed to produce images that look like they are taken on a toy camera?! If it were 1st April I'd understand.

But, then they may have done market research in the Japanese market and the Japanese consumer loves and buys some very odd stuff.

I think most of us were bemused by the various bright colour schemes the k-x could be had in, but it looks like they sold.

Who knows.

If it's as small as it looks, then think Canon Powershot S95 and Panasonic Lumix LX5 - it looks like it's somewhere in between.

C: S95 - Q5 - LX5
W: 100 - 103 - 108
H: 58 - 57 - 64
D: 30 - 31 - 24*

*Excluding protuding lens

This is a "serious compact" with interchangeable lenses. Not a micro-four-thirds or NEX / NX competitor.

It's getting slammed by most comments on the pages I've read so far ..... and the for same reason I'd not consider it. A sensor no bigger than most P&S ? What were Pentax thinking :

Sensor size next to Sony

This strikes me as a very Japanese (or at least East Asian) product. A few generations ago, someone might have bought a piece of fine netsuke; now they buy something self-consciously retro and nearly as miniature to put on a key-ring, instead of a belt. The sensor is fine for its presumed purpose - web shots for the social networking crowd. I doubt Pentax will have factored selling many of these in Europe and North America. I'd guess that the rumoured larger, K-mount ILF camera is for our markets, if ever one does appear. Nothing to see here, imho, at least for us. What we don't yet know is whether Pentax have left it too late to introduce a fuller-sized camera to compete with the interchangeable lens compacts from Oly, Samsung, Sony and the rest. Anyway, I wish this little Q all the best even though I'd never buy one.

Uses a (Sony?) backlit CMOS... high ISO looks better than average for a compact: http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/PENTAXQ/PENTAXQA7.HTM

Interesting product.
