Sara's Window

Durham Cathedral's most recent glass artwork is a huge memorial window to the memory of student Sara Pilkington who died suddenly in her final year at Durham in 2012 aged just 21. Her family commissioned glass artist Mel Howse to create the window which they asked should be beautiful, uplifting, spiritual and celebratory. They invite visitors to the cathedral to interpret the work in their own way

These just go on getting better and better. You are a true artist Bill. As Barrie says, hope to see you in Durham before long.

Judges comments at camera club competitions can be extremely unpredictable due to variations in personal taste. A favourite photo can be dismissed by one judge and raved about by another. But at RPS level it is reasonable to expect a higher standard of judging expertise. It sounds like your panel of judges at the RPS were not very well organised with their work load that day and ran out of time. Not good. I have happier memories of going for an LRPS panel at Bath. The judges panel seemed well focussed and gave each submission close attention to detail. They did, I think, 18 panels of prints by the lunchtime break - I was last one up before the break. Listening to their comments as the various submissions were assessed I learned to predict in advance which ones were going to be successful and those which were not. I had earlier attended an assessment day with leading RPS experts and had personal advice on my panel from a Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society before taking my prints to Bath. It worked for me, I got my LRPS distinction.
At the end of the day the best and most important judge of your photos is yourself.

Enjoy your visit to the UK JudithAnn, there are some wonderful places to visit and photograph, you have some of them on your list. Our mountains are nowhere near as high as yours in Canada nor our open spaces so vast. But we have some beautiful areas. One thing we have that North America can't compete with are our historic buildings. For instance some of our cathedrals are around 800 and 900 years old.
Of those on you list the Isle of Skye is my personal favourite and Windermere is the closest to where I live. I'm really looking forward to seeing some of your images posted on PUF.

How can I pick a favourite among these amazing images...each and everyone a masterpiece., although I do keep being drawn back to the translucence of No. 13. I've heard so many people complaining about the weather of the West Highlands and Islands… but isn't that the true value of this region of the UK? I think you prove that here Bill.

Mainline steam
Up in the high Pennines for more mainline steam train photography. First up: 'The Citadel' special from Manchester to Carlisle speeding over Dandry Mire Viaduct at Garsdale double headed by two Class 5s. Really shifting with the two Fives making easy work of the ten coach train on the long climb to Ais Gill Summit.... Then a couple of hours later Tornado on the same line photographed at Culgaith with the Border Raider express from Birmingham to Carlisle.
This is the line British Rail wanted to shut down in the 1980s but it was saved by public protest and the then Transport Minister Michael Portillo.

Thanks Sry, Lenny and Bill. It was a great place to visit but the site is huge and I probably barely scratched the surface. Might have to go back again sometime.

Well done Rick, looks like you had a good photographic trip to the North Yorks/Cleveland coast.
