On the first one: Aiki, you are right, the eyes are just out of focus and the beard is in focus. I agree that this puts a bit of mystique in the picture and maybe that is why I like it. (But basically this was not intention but an oversight on my part; sometimes it works to break the rule.)
John, I agree that it does look a bit flat but I didn't want to increase contrast and it looks all right printed. Maybe I left it in AdobeRGB.
Mike, the original is a bit wider, so the crop here is intentional. It may be a "neither here nor there" crop... And no, his beard doesn't extend very much lower
Thanks for looking,

This is a portrait, one of a series I did at work, so it's a colleague:

Very educational to shoot 100+ people and I did make lots of dud ones (but don't tell them...). This is one I quite liked. I might post some more when I get permission from the "models".
Second one is a beach shot, taken shortly before sunset:

On Saturday I took a series of Romanescu "landscape" shots (remember the vegetables competition?)

Was my first time with this vegetable but definitely not the last.
And last but not least a shot from this years tall ship event in town, shot from the bedroom window:

As always C&C welcome,

Is the Llandadno Pier one your shot? Whether it is or not, it's a nice shot. There are some quite bad ones in the mix as well, so I assume that I didn't look at the shortlist...

I thought this was a very good competition subject. Shame that I was too busy to get an entry together. And it seems that others also didn't find the right opportunity. Maybe this theme should be given another chance at some later time...
Here's my favourite shadow shot, it's from 2006 I believe

Don't know if it shows here as it is in a hidden Picasa WEB album. Just in case, here is the link to the same shot in the PPG (that is very slow loading just to see one pic, though).
I would have loved to go out and find something like that or something completely different. Alas it wasn't to be.

no need for me to look for any smoke pics.
Very nice work and it's a pleasure to see your enthusiasm and creativity.
The bubble floating with the smoke is very nice. I like how you see parts of the room reflected in it.
The drops-n-bubbles are also very creative.
Enjoy the sarnies...

What I don't like so much is the halo of the hills, most visible on the right one but also on the left and in the centre.
I also would have been tempted to bring out the dramatic sky a bit more. In fact, I gave in to this temptation. Hope you don't mind me playing around with this wonderful image:
