I admit there are the occasional images where it would be nice to extract a bit more detail from under the wings as far more likely to underexpose an aircraft than overexpose...normally I just set the EV compensation to +1 (give or take 1/3rd value) which usually helps.

I would only really think about using both RAW +JPEG if i intended using the RAW or if the shot was absolutely vital and I wanted to increase my chances of getting a 'keeper'. Using a K-50 I think it would slow the camera down to much in processing time which could be important when taking fast moving aircraft...also I tend to use just 16GB cards rather than 32GB and the extra space is a major consideration on a full day out.

I often liken proponents of SOOC as those having a peculiar masochistic streak in them, like the people who play full realistic on computer games i.e. there are those I know about who will take on a mission in a popular u-boot simulation and do not use the facility to speed up time meaning that a mission will take weeks or months to finish.

Sounds to me like those sort of people would be more likely to shoot RAW.

I have only ever tried shooting for one afternoon in RAW, at the airport. Hadn't got a suitable editor waiting...not really sure what I was expecting but I much preferred the output in JPEG and as the only things I tend to alter are brightness, contrast, cropping, resizing and one or two similar level things I find I can do all that very quickly and easily using a 4-5 year old package that cost me about £15.

If I was selling my images and/or a customer wanted a particular 'look' then I can see that RAW might be essential otherwise my view is that 'Life is too short...'

The third one is my favourite as its sharper but also caught from a more unusual angle.

Out of interest...how do you find this new lens compared to what you were using before?

Thought i'd start a new thread as the old one was based on speculation and has in any case disappeared out of sight to newcomers.

What are your thoughts...will you be buying one?

I really like the 'chunky slightly retro look', love the swappable handgrip idea, spec seems very good generally...particularly to someone with a K-50 although the buffer seems very small...a backwards step in fact...why would you deliberately neuter it compared to the K-70? (maybe so you can 'restore' it in a hardware upgrade later?)...a dangerous game Ricoh are playing if indeed this is the case.

Biggest negative though has to be the price...£1100 body only !! As McEnroe would say "Are You serious?"

Why would anyone pay that much when you can get a K-3II with 16-85 in a kit for £100 less?

To me its a £700 - £750 camera body and I wouldn't pay a penny more. I should imagine that they will have to 'give away' the DBG7 grip with it to entice anyone to pay even a £1000 for it.

Will be interesting to see what the IQ looks like also at 25600 and 51200 given that they are quoting the optimistic figure of 800,000+ ISO !

Still on balance at least they are still supporting the brand and apparently the K3II replacement is yet to be announced as well as a rumoured APS-C mirrorless which may be imminent.

Now that the basic specs have been leaked it looks to me like a retro K-5 mkIII. Very similar size to K-5 and comes with the grip option and interchangeable fingergrips, slightly lighter than a K-5 but slightly heavier than a K70. Electronic shutter fast speed of 1/24,000 sec !!

Maybe its aimed at sports/action shooters who are still using their K5 II and IIs in preference to a K-3.

As for the price...£1100 does seem expensive but presumably when they started developing it (pre-Brexit) they probably had a figure of about £850-£900 in mind which would seem more reasonable for the spec given that photo gear from all OEMs seems to be on an upward move. Assuming it comes out in time for Easter it will have probably dropped to 1K for the summer holidays...£ Sterling usually strengthens against the Euro by then as well just in time for main holiday season.

According to Asahiman on US Forum who seems to have a link to the inside...the K3II replacement will be announced in due course. Can only assume that it will be about £1300-£1400 going off today's price for the KP.
