A few macros

After a pretty hectic week, I got out this evening for 35 mins in the garden to tryout a ringflash and to see if i could get to grips with it and the siggy 105 macro + 3 ext tubes +K3ii . Handheld and mf
I quite like it, I need to work out how to adjust it properly though, but for first time out, I'm happy with the results.

The 2 with some kind of fly, were inside a daffodil, if you zoom in the facets are visible in its eyes.
The last one is probably my fav, i like the lighting on it.

The lighting on these is nice and I would be interested to know what aperture was used as the DOF is wafer-thin. Not sure if the flash is up to shooting at smaller apertures to gain depth of field?

I find when shooting macro that the light source is the most important factor, i.e. it must be diffused and it must be powerful enough to shoot at apertures of F11 - F16, to get at least a bit of DOF. The best compromise I've found to date is a home-made softbox attached to a powerful manual flashgun.

Cheers guys,
David, as I was using 3 extension tubes and at times closest focusing distance, all of these were at f32.
The flash is actually quite powerful, it is a totally manual ring flash, viltrox jy 670.
Flash setting for these was at 1/128th power, so lots of scope there. I was trying to get a look as if no flash at all was used, (kind of).
I have a bit of messing around to do with it yet to get to know how it performs with different combos and I'd say a home made softbox will soon be on the cards.
Cheers again
Derek

Hi Derek

Are you sure the aperture was F32? Are your tubes the kind with aperture contacts? Even with full tubes I am surprised how thin the DOF is and I wonder if it's possible the tubes affected the ability to set the desired aperture and whether the camera was actually shooting at max aperture?

I might be completely wrong here, but these shots don't look as though F32 was used.

Hi David, the ext tubes have no contacts. F32 set on aperture ring.
Will do a quick check to see if it's operating as it should.
Keep in mind these are at max magnification, closest focus I could achieve.
Will let you know.
Cheers

Thanks Derek, I have spent a lot of time practising macro in our back garden, with all manner of different equipment combinations. I did once have a Sigma 105 DG EX macro lens on the end of a full set of tubes and found out that it was always operating at F2.8, regardless of the aperture set on the lens. I now have a set of tubes with full contacts, so don't have an issue, but your images look a bit like some of mine at F2.8. Actually, using F2.8 on a full set of tubes is an interesting experience and can result in some pretty dramatic looking images, so much so that I started to use it intentionally sometimes. I've posted this image before so you might have seen it, this is an example of F2.8 on a 105mm macro lens, with a full set of extension tubes:

And, you were correct.
The extension tubes are making the lens shoot wide open. Even though the lens is set to min aperture at f32.
The lens on its own works as it should either set to A or using aperture ring.
It's funny that, as I had thought there was an issue before when testing something but when I took the lens and ext tubes off and looked down the barrel I could see that it was at min aperture.
Knowing that you know your stuff made me do a proper check, and sure enough
It's staying at f2.8 with the tubes on.
New tubes probably in order.
Mine are a set of vivitar auto ext tubes, though with no contacts I don't know why they call them auto.

Thanks again David, much appreciated

Yes, your shot is what I get as well, that's brilliant. Really glad you had the same issue and spotted it in mine.
Much much appreciated

No problem Derek, glad I could be of assistance. However, once you've sorted out this issue I suspect your next problem will be that the flash isn't bright enough. It took me a long time to get a workable solution for apertures of F16 or thereabouts, you really need a lot of diffused light to make this work acceptably. Macro has to be the hardest of photography disciplines to get right.

good set Derek, it is hard to get decent shots hand held at that magnification, well done. have found CIF a great help in that situation but i probably have older and shakier hands than you.

Cheers guys, as David Storm has pointed out to me, they were all shot wide open at f2.8 as the ext tubes held the lens at that regardless of what I set. So hopefully now new tubes are on the way I'll be able to get more Dof.

Try scraping the anodised black paint off where the tube touches the camera contacts. I tried a normal set and got the same problem you describe and then I tried a scraped Vivitar 2x converter tube (with the glass removed) when it all worked properly. Also, it helps to have the camera set to 'M'.
Both the *istDS and the K5 are incurably addicted to old glass
