Shooting RAW and JPEG at same time K5iis
Posted in Pentax Digital SLRs
Just come in from a shooting some waders and found the RAW plus option. Thanks for posting though Phil & John. Only just starting to shoot RAW having spent the first part of my photographic journey thoroughly getting to grips with lenses, speeds, apertures etc and shooting JPEGs - RAW is bit of revelation! 8)
Shooting RAW and JPEG at same time K5iis

Someone recently told me that some DSLRs can be set up to shoot and store both a RAW and JPEG at the same time. Is this possible with K5iis?
Wanted/hire Pentax 560mm

I'll check out that youtube vid -thanks. Alan - maybe if I combined it with a trip south, that I do from time to time, 250 miles is an option! Can anyone point me to some photo taken with 150-450mm plus 1.4 converter?
Dialing in FL for manual lenses and SR
Posted in Pentax Digital SLRs
Ah - so that's why it stopped prompting me for it- because I had switched SR off!. Thanks John, that's another bit of the jigsaw in place. Exif is not a big issue for me, so good to know if I do need to quickly take advantage of an opportunity, not dialing in is not going to impact on image quality:D

Thanks John - mmmmm 350 for 3 days!- kind of chicken and egg in that if I had that sort of cash to spend on a hire I probably would not be hesitant about splashing out on a new one. perhaps my question should have been "is there anyone within 100 miles of Oban who would mind if I came and spent a morning/afternoon with them to see what a 560mm (them using it, not me) is like in exchange for a 50 donation to their favourite charity" Ho-hum.

Wondering if anyone has a Pentax 560mm lens for sale or knows the closest place to me where I can hire one from. I am close to Oban so expect it might be Glasgow.
Dialing in FL for manual lenses and SR
Posted in Pentax Digital SLRs
When using manual lenses is the reason for dialing in the FL of the lens only because of the need to optimise the oscillation of the SR function for that lens or is it needed for something else as well? I am asking because sometimes when switching a manual lens under pressure ie for an opportune bird shot, saving time and not dialing in the len's FL would be beneficial. The SR would be switched off anyway as I've stopped trying to grab bird shots in poor light. Thoughts welcome.
Mitsuki 400mm prime for sale
Posted in Classified Adverts
I've decided to sell my Mitsuki 400mm prime lens. Here is a link to more info on it: http://www.pentaxforums.com/userreviews/tokina-rmc-tokina-400mm-f5-6.html Mine is in used condition and has fungus (does not impact on pictures though). I am not sure if mine is a bit of duff copy but I just cannot get any reasonable shots with it on my K5iis - sold as described with original lens cap and soft case. Open to offers plus P&P and we'll see how we do.

pre-setting FL on manual zoom lenses
Posted in Lenses for Pentax Cameras
Hi - I think the SR is another topic (albeit an interesting one) , I have it switched off the whole time as, unless I need to grab a photo in very low light, my understanding is it hinders sharpness at higher speeds. Re the FL setting, these are for stationary birds. I did not know it is better to have the dialed in FL below the likely zoom used for the shot, than above. Why is that though (not questioning it, my brain just needs to understand why  )

I must admit I am in two minds HarisF1 whether or not to sell it. I bought it a while ago when building up my collection of manual lenses when I first got my digi SLR - compared to then I know what I am doing now!- so maybe I should give it another go. Interesting to know recent prices though. Can you post any bird shots you captured with this lens to inspire me to give it another go?

pre-setting FL on manual zoom lenses

I am curious to know how others handle this conundrum. When using manual zoom lenses on my K5iis I dial in the mid way FL as best of a bad job average as, if birding, its impractical to zoom in to frame the shot, check the FL and dial it in, and expect the bird to still be there! - what do others do?

Just looked at this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jRlGu9T5lXk - and also https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XzasQOxhbKE I now realise I have been using SR all wrong - oh well always learning.

Thanks John, - Pentax call it SR (shake reduction) and the in-body system seems to work very well. But for capturing birds and other fast moving subjects it's not helpful, whether in camera or in lens. The reason is that there's a small delay whilst SR locks in and also that reducing camera shake does nothing at all to reduce subject movement. So for fast moving subjects we still need high shutter speeds and when on a tripod we need SR switched off. In the latter case, the two second delay switches off SR and also raises the mirror two seconds before the exposure is made, allowing any mirror vibration to subside.Just to clarify -switching off SR stops the 2 second delay as opposed to other way round?

I always thought as Pentax bodies (k series) has IS built in there was no need for lenses to have it - hence old glass performs very well. I get stunning shots with my FA 80-320 (which has not got built in IS) -just a shame it does not have the reach. I will also be a bit annoyed if the lens IS is critical as the person who sold me the Sigma 150 -500mm (via this forum:evil:) told me it would not make any difference due to Pentax body having IS - he advertised it as the latest model which it evidently was not when it arrived which is why I queried it with him. Apart from that it appeared in good nick so I decided not to insist on a refund.

How can IS induce shake when a tripod is used? (just have a curious mind, so need to understand, not questioning the advice :) )

My version of the lens does not have SR or IS - how does turning the IS off in the camera help with focus?

Too dark now for the tiles but that is a good idea Algi - I'll give it a go. Chris - I left stabilisation on (I always do). Does leaving it on effect sharpness and if so how. Re the higher iso - I tried that before to get the shutter speed up and just makes things worse a horribly noisy but I'll give it another go. Rightly or wrongly I presumed by taking it on auto then the best settings would be achieved. re the focus, I have zoomed in on all parts of the birds and the branch to check - none of it is in focus. How much do sigma charge for "checking and correcting" a lens?

Hi Pete - at 500mm -auto put it all at f6.3, iso 320, ET320.

Ok, just went out - light not great, figured "auto" knows best - this is typical shot with this lens - tripod but did not go as far as mu and rt - this has had no PP, no cropping, its high res as in 9MB! - nothing is in focus/sharp - the subject i.e. the bird (focused on this), the branch in the fore or tree/twigs in the background - its not the camera as it takes tack sharp with my old glass etc. Thoughts welcome. I brought the lens 2nd hand - is it time to send it to Sigma for some adjustments? this second image shows what this camera can do with manual 50mm lens

Thanks for all of the above - starting to think something on my sigma 150- 500 maybe out of kilter - had it for two years and never got an image with it that I am happy with re sharpness. Are their things with this lens that can wear, come lose etc which can throw it off kilter?
