Oh well that was not as successful as I had hoped. I tried photographing a group of 7 herons about 150m away - focusing was really difficult and purple fringing around the white on their heads was horrendous - when shooting twigs (there was a lack of birds!) up to about 20m away things looked quite sharp and any bird would have filled the frame. So might have another go at that. But my conclusion is that it is not worth using it for more reach.

I was surprised at this result because when used as scope the image is very good for the human eyes.

So I would not advise all going off to ebay to find second hand HR66! - my copy does have quite bad fungus growth on rear of the front lens - I presume that would just cause a fuzziness as opposed to any CA?

If I manage to take any decent < 20m shots of birds I'll post them up.

Are you going to have ago with your's eenymac?

Not tried it myself but do also have an HR66, and lurking somewhere is an old photo adapter. Just need to fit a PK T-Mount and I should be good to go so will have to give it a try sometime.
Be interested to see / hear how you got on.

thanks Mongoose re poor quality adaptors - I'll will certainly check the one I purchased out thoroughly ( when it finally arrives really cheap from china:shock - I'll probably bin it now after your advice -that could have been an expensive step on the learning curve!

I have just found my old Opticron HR.66 telescope for bird watching lurking in the cupboard - It had a camera fitment for my old 35mm camera years ago (It was not pentax). I had completely forgot that I owned this and the fitment looked like a K mount - it was a K mount!. So I am off to play! .

Has anyone had any experience of shooting through bird scopes with DSLRs?

Thanks for the info - I was chasing a Mitsuki 400 on ebay but it was OM mount- however then scored another one with M42 - so adaptor for that will not break the bank and infinity will be maintained without the need for any glass and light loss. So all came good in the end

I have found a really nice old glass 400mm for sale but it is an OM fit and I cannot find an OM lens to K camera adaptor.

So to make it fit on my K5iis logic tells me I can fit an OM to EOS adaptor to it (which has no lens in it - but maintains infinity - so from infinity point of view nothing has changed) and then fit a EOS to K mount adaptor on to that (again no lens involved in these and infinity is maintained).

I have been advised this will create a stacking effect and infinity will be lost but I cannot get my head round the fact that each adaptor on their own would not have a smaller macro effect but maintain infinity - I am still learning about all this so have probably missed something obvious but any answers would help my sanity.

Thanks

Stephen

Hi D,

Just PMed a reply but cannot tell if it went or not (newbie status gremlin!). Basically - Yes we have a deal at £89 (including P&P) - can you PM me your private email address to get round my newbie status on this forum potentially stopping me replying to your PM - then we can sort out all of the logistics/details off this public space .

Thanks

Stephen

very interested in this lens - I will have to fit a K mount adaptor for it to go on my K5iis - can you just tell me if that will have any affect on its performance at macro or infinity? - if you get back to me I can buy straight away via paypal if I decide to go for it

Thanks

Stephen
