Of course, but there's a sensible threshold with this surely? Is anyone that much of a RAW purist in that they want control of the low level processing done to turn the electronic signals come from the sensor into the non processed basic picture?
Absolutely, it would take the concept of geekiness to new stratospheric heights. The only question is raises is how much this initial processing affects the final result. I've often said I like "Pentax colour", which is fine in terms of the JPEG output, but perhaps it's also already embedded into the RAW file as well, to some degree.

Certainly IMHO Pentax make more of Sony sensors than Sony do themselves.
Sure, but then we're getting into the realms of choosing a particular camera which provides an output that excites us.

Even a lens imparts some initial "processing" that affects the final result and people choose lenses with that in mind.

If people want total control over everything then their only option is to design and build a camera and lenses themselves which is suited to their personal particular needs. Otherwise they have to leave some of the "photon to digital data" conversion to others and buy the camera/lens hardware which most resonates with their vision.

The scenario of worrying about what is going on between photons and the RAW File is taking things to the nonsensical level IMO. People have to be sensible and accept a camera's basic image data for all practical purposes includes some post sensor data management and processing before a RAW file is outputted.
I am in agreement with you both on this, I have no desire to get back to 'photons'. I should have chosen my words better. It is a question of degrees and amount of processing that takes place.

I guess the problem for me is that recent developments have tended to add features that are of no real interest to me. Video leaves me cold and super fast shooting has no appeal. I appreciate that I may be in a minority, but I just want a camera that in combination with good glass provides the best possible IQ.
I think we are getting close to the limit with cropped sensors. Yes I'm sure high ISO performance has a way to go, but a quick analysis of my exif data shows 90% of my shots are between ISO 100 and 400.

I have a suspicion that some of the recent improvements are a result of in camera processing of the RAW file. In other words RAW files are not really RAW. I freely admit I have no proof to support this statement, but the point I want to make is that I want my RAW files to be RAW. I want to be in control of any post processing.

This reminds me in someway of video recorders and the plethora of useless features manufactures added
when all users really wanted was a machine that recorded TV programmes with good fidelity.

Apologies for the rant like tone of the post.

I also agree with Horse and John, DSLR everytime. I find mirrored cameras difficult to use and a unpleasant experience. A Pentax future without an optical viewfinder, would for me, mean a change of systems.

I have for sale a Pentax SMC F 35-105 AF F4-5.6 Zoom lens. Pentax put quite a bit of design into this lens, it has 16 glass elements and a macro setting a 105mm, which allows magnification up to .25X.

The lens is in what I would describe as good used condition. It is fully functional and everything working as it should. There are the usual spots of dust commensurate with a lens of this age.

This is a good deal - my most used lens, a real step up from the kit and the extra 2mm wider makes a big difference!
Thanks Tony it really is a good lens and I had no intention of selling it at all but I can't fight the urge to try an even wider angle and I need the funds.

Remember the 16-45 is full frame from around 21mm, if you have a suitable Pentax film body, why not give it a try?

From memory they only apply to RAW format files, although there was a setting you could modify in the profile file that made them available for JPEG also? I'm not entirely sure.
FYI, there are over 20 profiles for JPGs available to download via the Adobe Profile downloader.

the prize (£1000) seemed a bit stingey given they made over £1.3m from the calendar last year - or is it just me ?
If Ricoh marketing had been on the ball, they would have had a coordinated marketing campaign in place pushing the fact that the winning image was shot on a Pentax, especially since there is a prior relationship with the programme from earlier this year (binocular recycling initiative at Bird Fair in August)

As for the prize, well it should still be possible to invite Bill to the Open day at SRS and present him with one of the first K? cameras and possibly DA 12-28 lens.

I guess pentax found out the same time as we did. The bbc press team will only be interested in promoting their programmes not other commercial organisations.
Well if that's the case, they would be looking for another job , if they worked for me. A marketing department with its finger on the pulse should be aware of all national competitions and be ready to make the most of any opportunity that presents itself.

A proactive approach would have been to approach the BBC and offer to donate the first prize, if the image was captured with Pentax equipment. If not, then a suitable donation to Children in Need could have been made.

The K5 image (second image) comes closest to matching the brickwork and the scene as I looked at it. Not surprisingly it pulled in more detail from the sky.
