Three weeks after the warranty expired on my girlfriend's Laptop (Compaq CQ-61), it now fails to turn on

After a year's flawless service, it just died and won't come back on.

As per the HP web site, I've removed the mains adaptor and battery, waited a few minutes then plugged the mains adaptor back, hold down the off/on switch for 30 seconds. The LED flashes briefly on the off/on switch, and nothing.

The same also applies when trying the same procedure, but with the battery only.

Subsequent attempts have no effect, totally dead.

My girlfriend rang the Currys warranty line this morning, where she got through, in her words 'to the most arrogant and un-helpful person who nearly had me in tears'. A case of warranty's finished, tough.

My first line of thought is to take the Laptop to either Currys/PC World, hoping that they might have a power adaptor that I could try. Of course if this worked, great (fairly cheap outcome).

Failing this, I'm a bit stuck.

Surely a £380 Laptop is meant to last longer than three weeks past it's warranty of 29/07/2009?

Any advice appreciated.

Regards
Adrian
Adrian DO NOT USE CURRYS.

If you can't get to a computer shop, I would suggest you try John Lewis, they are most helpfull.

Hi fellow pentaxusers...

Is anyone of you into Underwater Photography. I am thinking of combining my two favorite hobbies, scuba diving and photography. However, I know that this increases the costs for a while. Therefore, I would like to ask for some advice.
I own a K20D the 18 - 55mm WR zoom, the 16 -45mm f/4 zoom and a FA 50mm prime. What kind of housing would you suggest or do you use? Which would be the best lens for UW? I am thinking of using the prime, because I don't think a zoom as applicable in a housing. Am I wrong?

Thanks for your help.
Dan
Hi Dan,

I used to dive but the old Arthritis finall caught up with me,
but in answer to your question, most scuba divers use the Nikonnoss.(If the spelling is wrong I'm sorry)

It is specifically designed for under water photography!

Ikelite make housings for most cameras, but do you really want to risk an O ring failing on your K20D, I would not!

My best advice, is to get along to the 2011 LIDS,(London International Dive Show.)

There you can get specialist advice on housings and lenses ect.

Go on the last day of the show that's when the bargains are to be found as most vendors don't want to cart loads of stock back!

Take only pictures, leave only Bubbles.

Kindest regards,

Peter

With the world of technology changing so fast and new products comming onto the market, it seems every six months or so. Can I ask the question what would forum members realy like to see in the next Pentax Digital slr camera.Would it be full frame or better noise at high iso or may be a better extended warranty. Any way think it over and I look forward to reading your opinions.
Best wishes, Ian
Water proof and not water resistant is a must.

Size/weight is not an issue with me,as I find my K20D OK.

Although Carbon Fibre and Magnesium might be the way to go for chassis and body.

Swivel out/and round LCD screen would be rather nice GPS may be but not a must.

As for a decent Neoprene neck strap,Chris(SRS) and myself have been trying to get the elusive Pentax Sport Strap with detachable clips,to no avail, and I think that there is little chance of Pentax ever offering a decent neck strap!
I think an Optech strap is the solution!

Why not a survey of owners, initiated by Pentax?
Best way to get some really good customer feedback, and it could prove to be really useful when a new model gets to the drawing board!

Hi Larry,
Are you taking studio portrait shots, or random shots of family?

If taking studio portraits, are you using special lighting for effects?

If taking random portrait shots then I would go for the natural effect,as retouched skin tones in portraits is not my idea of natural.
After all Larry, none of us are perfect, so why try to make out that we are something that we are not.

Give me a PM sometime and we can have a ratchet and discuss ideas.
hope to talk with you soon ,

Listen Mate, perhaps you aint perfect, but I am!

Peter

I'll be in touch.
Hi Larry,

When I'm shooting Jpeg I tend to bracket the exposure by 1/2 or 2/3 stops. I started this on the GX10 and I was very happy with the Jpeg quality out of the camera. Pick the best exposure.

Maybe I'm a bit more demanding or I'm pixel peeping but I'm less happy with the Jpeg and using RAW more on the K-7.

However I'm using the RAW+Jpeg format and this takes up a lot of space.

So should I ditch the JPeg altogether ?
And can I ditch the bracketing?

Looking at the RAW the bracketing just results in different developing of the same RAW to various Jpeg exposures. Rarely do the RAW frames produce different results.

Can I safely risk just shooting raw? Once? Or should I keep eating up the memory cards? Views and insight welcome please.

EDIT: don't you hate proofing the message and posting to find the thread title is garbage!!!
Depends on what you want.

I personally use Raw+Jpeg, on a 16 Gig card storage space for me is not an issue.

But my Sony Bravia Television will not display Raw, only Jpeg.

Peter
