For an old grandpa you are looking rather young, Ernst.

Hello Carly!

Welcome to both of you in this fine forum...

Judith Ann, I can see the yummy cake and the dog pic. But again they are 'only' 400 pixels wide.

That self portrait I like very much, very good light on this one.
By the way: You have your name tatooed on your cheek?

I just had a look at the pics you uploaded to the gallery and see that these are bigger. You also have a bigger version of the competition entry there (unfortunately a bit too big to submit for the competition).
(I think that everyone agrees that we should allow a resubmission of the same pic in a bigger version?)

Reminds me of Robin Cook.
Your series of faces is just amazing! Keep them coming...

Same here, only see three pics (first three).

Looking at the source code (HTML) it seems that some are missing the JPG extension, one does have it but doesn't show anyway.

Of the first three I do like the church most, wonderful mood in that shot.

You should post the shots a little bigger, though, difficult to judge when they are so small. 800 pixels on the longest side is favourable for posting in the forum.

What? It only has one pixel? And the acronym steam (for serial time-encoded amplified imaging). The detector doesn't look like full frame to me.

It'll never sell! Who would want a crop sensor one pixel steam camera:

As usual, here is a thread for discussing the theme. I might tune in to this until a first entry is submitted. After that I will not read it, so if and when questions arise, send a PM to me.

Your assignment, should you choose to accept it, will be to submit an entry for the theme of 'Fruit'. You are asked to adhere to the Pentax User Forum Fortnightly Competition Rules!

As always, I won't insist on seeing a real fruit, some 'forbidden fruit' for example would be well within theme. If the 'fruitiness' of your picture shouldn't be obvious to me I will ask you via PM.

This competition will close on the 13. May, 1800 hours British Summer Time. (Incidentally I will be on a meeting again, but will have done my bits by Wednesday evening.)

Happy shooting!

Thanks Andrew,

winning again, wow. I too was happy to see more entries come in, even if they came in a bit late. And it wasn't just making up numbers, there were fine entries to be seen, I liked most of them. So I wasn't expecting this.

And this appears to be your favourite subject right now – isn’t it another angle of the harbour light featured in your ‘Best picture’ winning entry?
You are right, this is the same harbour light. It's one of my favourite subjects for evening shots as it is in walking distance (I can see the lights from our flat) so it lends itself for an evening stroll.

The colours are sublime. And, while I find in many of my shots taken at a similar hour the light from the sunken sun un-balances the picture, in this case I think there is good balance between the darker sky in the upper right and lighter sky to the left.
I did lighten up the right hand side a bit and toned down the left. But I think it's mainly the bright harbour light that balances the lighter sky on the left.

... But my favourite part of the picture are the rocks in the bottom right which have a wonderful nocturnal feel – these add nice texture to what is otherwise a very smooth image. In fact, I’d like to have seen more of these in the frame – though I can see how this would probably have spoilt the composition.
It was the original idea to have more of the stones in the frame and the stones 'sinking' into the smoky water. Alas, there weren't any waves to create that smoky water effect in a long exposure. This would, of course, have asked for a different composition.

Well, I have to ponder a new theme now...

Too blue for my taste. But converting this to true B&W I quite like it.

I have not a lot of experience with that. Bob (a.k.a. RR) had sent me this link recently, which is more like how to take star trail photos.

From that and Malo's fine star trail example in the competition here, I think you'll get problems in avoiding star trails. At 70 mm and 10 seconds I already saw lines where the stars should have been. (This was pointing more or less due West, though). If it is anything like a dark night (which you need to see the stars in the first place) I suppose you would need a much longer exposure than 10 seconds.

I think the best advice is: Go out, have a play and enjoy it. The worst that can happen is that you learn a lot without getting a reasonable shot.

For proper galaxy photos I know that you need a clockwork (or computer controlled drive) to keep the stars in the same place in your frame. That is a different ballgame alltogether...

Hope it helps,
Prieni

Good light tonight!
