In Firefox on my monitor the first one has more punch (as in more saturation, or, checking the histogram in PS, the first one being a tad darker).

Here's what it looks like in PS (upper one OrangeInGate, lower one OrangeInGatea)

It's quite interesting, though, how the image changes when you take it out of the context.
Still a good portrait but I have to agree with Paul that it is the much stronger picture without that crop...

Here's my variation on the theme.

I would also say that starting from a JPG would have most likely led to some posterisation. But unless I would try to repeat the steps from a JPG I cannot be sure...

Judith Ann,
I just replaced the s128/IMGP4902.JPG with s800/IMGP4902.JPG
This is the result:

When copying the link to your photo, make sure that you have selected the right size. In this respect Picasa is not the easiest, but if you know what to do it's easy enough...

We're getting there.

No of course not, and to be fair I didn't suggest it was.
That is true, you didn't. I did take the liberty to exaggerate a bit

Trying out very carefully before buying is good advice in general. And I agree with your assessment of sensor sizes.

John,

that much is true (and that's why I would have stayed with Pentax in the end). But what happens when Pentax gets away with taking too long with their service time and time again? It will become normality.

Apparently Tel is not too attached to Pentax and unacceptable service has tipped the scale against Pentax. No big deal. Very inconvenient for Tel, that's for sure.

What if the Olympus is no better, the lenses are certainly more expensive, and the body might be faulty. What happens then?
Is that an argument to never change maker, ever? Do you stick to the same brand car with the same vigour?

What if the Olympus is better? And if the body isn't faulty? What happens then?

But I'm sure he can speak for himself.

Golf,

most of us have had their cameras back in two weeks. So the standard repair time is only up to 6 weeks because they hold Tel's one forever

And Tel's moving to another manufacturer is the best way of expressing his lack of satisfaction with that kind of service. And it's the only reaction that really is heard when it occurs in numbers.

It could well be that Olympus repair turnaround is not any better. Well, there are more manufacturers out there. And I sincerly hope that Tel won't have to find out what the Oly repair time is.

piotro,

I had a look at two RAW files before/after service. The production ID has a ? in the descriptor of PhotoME, that flags up that it is not known, if it really is Production ID in there.

For my camera this has changed from 4 (before) to 1 (after service). As in my camera the service bit has been set, the manufacture date changed (it is the day of service now).

My cameras internal serial number has changed by about 80,000. I'm sure that the manufacture date really is a date (but can be service date), with the other numbers I wouldn't be so sure.

Regarding the shutter count: My shutter count has increased by about 40, which seems to be reasonable. But the camera started image numbering at 1. Only when I copied my last PEF on the SD card did it pick up where it had been. This is normal behaviour I think.

The important thing is that the banding hasn't occurred since it came back and the noise level at high ISO is much lower now. So I am happy.

Tel, I'm feeling with you and I can understand that you are fed up with Pentax (service dept. especially). I'm sure that you will enjoy the new Oly when you get it. After all, DSLR's are mature products these days and all the cameras are capable of high quality pics. I don't like to see you going but I would perhaps have done the same in your situation (or at least I would have thought hard about it).
Hope you'll pay a visit from time to time.

Internet Explorer:
I'm using Firefox and that has no problems with the dropped jpg extensions. At least not in some cases. There must be another problem.
I now can see all the images in the original post...

Hi Judith Ann,

no, your competition entry is not too big. I think you should replace it with a bigger version.
I only meant that the version you have in your gallery is bigger than the competition entry but it is too big to be used as a competition entry.

To get to grips with the size it would be good to know what you do to get them posted on the internet (I believe you are using blogspot). Then we can work out a way how to post them in the size you want. (Well, or as we want:lol

We will get there, lots of time for the competition...
