Fire Basket
Didn't have the opportunity to approach this competition theme with any great vigour & have used one of the suggested possibilities, so my apologies to Mhuni for a lack of originality this time around. I took the opportunity to capture this on a drunken weekend spent in a teepee in mid Wales.

It was a big relief to log on yesterday and find that there was lots of last day posting. At least I’m in a position to judge properly now. For a while, it was simply a case of who out of Martin, Ralf & Hefty was coming in 1st, 2nd or 3rd. Anyway, to judgment...
Malo 1961 – Night Sky
I’ve seen this effect before, but didn’t realise how much movement you can get in such a short (relatively that is) exposure – the others I’ve seen I think were in hours. Anyway, the colours are great – muted pastel tones, with the harsher metallic silver standing out nicely. And of course the trailing stars are wonderful. Composition, as we’ve come to expect from Mr. Malo, is good too – the placing of the tower and the way the stars are juxtaposed behind it. However, my one reservation is the tower – in itself it’s not a particularly attractive structure.
Prieni – Western harbour light
Another wonderful, polished image, Ralf (and I do prefer this to your alternate entries, though they also have merit). And this appears to be your favourite subject right now – isn’t it another angle of the harbour light featured in your ‘Best picture’ winning entry? The colours are sublime. And, while I find in many of my shots taken at a similar hour the light from the sunken sun un-balances the picture, in this case I think there is good balance between the darker sky in the upper right and lighter sky to the left. The lights on the horizon are a nice touch, as of course is the main light situated on a golden section. But my favourite part of the picture are the rocks in the bottom right which have a wonderful nocturnal feel – these add nice texture to what is otherwise a very smooth image. In fact, I’d like to have seen more of these in the frame – though I can see how this would probably have spoilt the composition.
Hefty1 – Quick caffeine fix
Cute concept shot. Like the placement of the person (you?!) to the left – and reflected in the kettle. Would have liked to see the kettle steaming, which would have added to the shot. Bit burnt out in top right, and white balance perhaps a tad warm. But I like the quirkiness of the shot, and it does have a late hour feel to it.
Mikew – No gay abandon(!)
Nice crisp image and of course hot chocolate is redolent of bedtime. Like the detail on the cup & saucer with the sugar inside. The chocolate’s a nice touch too. But I’m not sure about the background surface. And more seriously it’s a bit too well lit to evoke night. A steaming bowl of hot chocolate would have been just the ticket.
RR – Fire basket
A drunken weekend in a tepee in Wales – sounds interesting. I imagine you had better things to do than take pictures! Nevertheless, there’s a nice glow to this photo, and it’s certainly evocative of campfire nights. I also like the way the fire has illuminated the sides of the basket. However, for it to really work the image needs greater crispness either through a faster shutter speed or a narrower aperture (or more sobriety?!). Problem is that you probably would have to have gone down to such a high ISO that this would have degraded the image. Still, I would have pushed it further than 400.
MGraley – Silk sky
Not sure if your title was ironic (or I’m interpreting it incorrectly), but if there was one thing I’d say this sky wasn’t it’s silky! Is this severe grain the result of the long exposure required and/or is it the result of post-processing? Either way, while it’s extreme, there’s a lot I like about the effect. The stars are great and what it’s done to the tree is kind of neat. However, the composition lets it down. Not sure how practical it would have been under your shooting circumstances, but if the moon (or large star?) and tree could have been arranged differently I might have rather liked this despite the extreme noise.
PSchlute – Past your bedtime
Another cute concept shot. It’s a really uncomplicated photo, but I find this rather pleasing. Just goes to show how something so simple can work – there’s nothing to it, but I like it. The red is so nicely saturated and the black so inky. However, the marks on the front of the display spoil it rather, and could easily have been cloned out.
Lilly – Late night surf
Great looking shot, as we’ve come to expect from you Lilly. There’s something almost textural about it – it’s an earthy image (of a not particularly earthy subject matter – and I’m talking about everything in the shot not just the person at the computer!). The composition works well. And I think the vignetting (was this added?), most evident in the top right corner, enhances the image. However, I think it’s too brightly lit to really evoke the night.
Rob – Sleeping peacefully
More extreme noise – but, in its place I can live with noise, and once again I don’t think the effect is entirely unpleasant (trees interesting this time too). Where there is light, even the small amount on the gravestones to the left of the image, I think it’s highly evocative in the way that it reveals the outline of the graves. The shadows across the path are great (if only the nearest was a bit more defined). If the statue which can be dimly made out atop a grave to the left of the path had a bit more light on it, this might have made a great focal point in a different composition. Unfortunately, though, this image is let down by the lack of light, but it just goes to show what we might try for. It’s almost a spectacularly eery shot – and the kind of adventurous approach I was hoping for in setting the subject.
Darkmunk – Bedtime story
A cute non-concept image this time! The softbox on the flash has worked really well here – with the nocturnal feel if anything enhanced. Great detail on the illuminated parts of the picture. It’s a nice capture – with the toddler clearly absorbed by the book, and ignoring all the strange antics that Daddy(?) must have been up to! However, there’s a little too much dark in the shot (particularly the top left), and the balance of the picture for me is slightly off (probably caused by this).
Right to the final judgment:
First: Prieni – I think this is the most accomplished shot for the subject - of your lucky harbour light!
Second: Rob – Partly for attempting to shoot such a challenging subject matter, but more importantly for almost pulling off a really eery shot.
Third: Malo 1961 – Neat photo, just a shame about the tower!

Judith Ann - I came in this morning to see that you had posted an image late. I was prepared to at least comment on it. However, for some reason I cannot get your image to appear. This may be because of the extremely poor connection we're suffering here at present. Though actually I think it is probably something else - I used to be unable to view images by a Forum Member from the US when they posted in the old weekly comp (forgotten their name, but the one that won the decay competition last year judged by Lilly - was it Amoringello?). I have a hunch the same is happening here, though never got to the bottom of it before so am still unsure what's occurring.
