^^ you had the Tamron at f/10. So, when you looked through it before the shot, the Tamron lens is wide open (no vignetting) but when it took the shot it stopped down to f/10 as instructed (leading to vignetting). Set both wide open and it should be fine; if you have too much light or need more DoF stop down the reversed lens, not the Tamron.

28 onto 90 will give you somewhere around 3.25:1-3.5-ish ( 90/28 ). But it does depend a bit on where you're focused on both, ie actual distance between main and reversed which changes as you set the focus differently. For example if you're at the nearest focus (rather than infinity) on the 28 you have marginally more magnification than were you at infinity

I think it is trying to appeal to the uninformed masses - HD is more widely understood than SMC. It's only us anoraks that 'get' SMC.

Hm, I think I know my next purchase if it's affordable. Ditto what Womble said, this would be worth a bit of a lens offload for me.

Milk bottle plastic is cheap and handy but transmits a lot of light. I found that it still gives a specular hotspot. Tissue paper is kinder but eats 3 stops. I'm using oiled 120mg fine quality paper these days

The 58-II is really very good, in fact it has more functionality than the topend 540 Pentax model. I use it on manual with rear sync though, never on PTTL or any of the auto modes (I use reversed lenses/microscope objectives so always manual). The 58-II also remembers setting unlike any of the Pentax ones which is really nice and has a slightly sturdier base (metal). Heck I don't have a bad thing to say about it. The 360 is a pain because it doesn't swivel and you can't switch the timeout off.

Possibly the ugliest home made diffuser I've seen, but I bet it's also the best (2 directions). Shame there's no pentax compatible flash like the mp-e 65 dedicated one. I use something similar but not as good I think

Re: the light

Buy some pringles and eat them. ( or the own brand knock offs).
The tube (silver inside) can then be cut up and used as a light guide for the on board flash
Very good advice. Here's one I've made, although this is for hot shoe flash, not the on-board version. This is about the fourth or fifth prototype and the most successful to date as it has adjustable tubes and fires flash from two directions, hence no shadows. I can get F16 at ISO 200 with this = perfect for macros with tubes attached.
