Unfortunately not, you can't see it from this part of the UK. I'd love to shoot it though so if you get any good pictures please share them!

Welcome to the forum Graham - I've still got my 80's vintage Praktica so you're not alone there!

Are you sure that's not a Coot?
Well, the Coot in your Coot shot is undeniably a Coot. The bird I was referring to in the Heron pic is actually unidentifiable to me, but Coot or Moorhen, it matters not.

What matters, to me at least, is this completely ambiguous and unquantifiable phrase "100% crop". It means nothing, not to me anyway.

If you were to crop an image such that only one pixel was left, is that still 100% crop? I have no clue.

If, on the other hand, one expresses a cropped image as a percentage of the full image . . . that makes a lot more sense to me, but is more difficult to establish.

The 100% crop term is something I have picked up here, or other forums, but of course refers to 100% zoom in photoshop, which I assume shows the image quality how it really is if you were to print at this size and hence gives an idea of quality even if you dont print so large.
Now that, I understand. If 100% crop means a selection of an image displayed at 100% size in photoshop . . . it was my understanding of this often quoted phrase that was at fault all along.
I understand what you're saying and agree that the phrase isn't quite accurate in its description. Instead of "100% crop" it actually means "a crop at 100% resolution".

Having said that, the term "100% crop" seems to have become generally accepted in photographic circles so I'm afraid you, I and everyone else is stuck with it...

As Hyram says, the main difference (other than the timescale) between the weekly and the fortnightly competitions is that the fortnightly one requires you to take your entry during the period the competition is "live", the weekly one tends to attract photos from the archives (although there's nothing stopping anybody shooting something new).

When wholesale changes were made to the look and feel of this forum earlier in the year, the weekly competition was moved to the new gallery section. But many who had been entering regularly stopped doing so as they either disliked the new format or they didn't ever look at the gallery part of the site so tended to forget there was a competition going on.

So there's no technical reason the fortnightly competition isn't in the gallery, rather it's for reasons of nostalgia.

About the flash, why has no one said a Metz 48 :
It's cheaper, more powerfull and best of all it has a swivelhead
You would still have the money afterwards to get a good secondhand 50mm
While what you say is true, it lacks an "Auto" mode and it can't act as a controller in a wireless setup - so it depends on which features are more important to you. The Pentax also has an (arguably) better interface making it easier to change settings in a hurry.

I've got the Pentax 360 and if I was starting again from scratch I'd buy another 360. It's a great flashgun and if it had a swivel head it'd be perfect!

In the "Competitions" sub forum - it's done in the style of a regular thread, like the weekly compo used to be before we got this swanky new site with a dedicated gallery feature...
