Hi Bruce, if you are thinking about going down ff route then maybe hold off on buying it. Of course there is the fact that it should still work on ff in crop mode.

This lens is expensive, its heavy, 810 grams, it doesn't have wr, it has some af issues.

This lens is sharp wide open, f1.8 through its range, little or no fringing compared other lenses with similar fl, controls distortion as well as anything else, built like a rolls royce tank apparently.

But i agree its a lot to fork out if you're unsure, maybe try renting it. Don't buy it on a whim, too darn expensive. You might need to keep checking the playback to make sure shots are in focus, that may not be practicable in some circumstances.

18 mm at f1.8 for astrophotography. As far as I know and I don't have this lens but I'm getting one, the patchy af stems from pdaf, not the cdaf. Apparently in live view its spot on, and mostly spot on through viewfinder.
The pentax 20-40mm was in the mix for me also, heard great reports about it. But the sigma is supposed to be just about the sharpest lens you can get for cropped sensor.

Top shots top-banana, like them all, but 2 and 3 stand out for me, with 2 pipping it.
And Welcome to the forum,
Derek

Cheers Alan, I do the weekly shopping in that town as there's no supermarket in ours and I had an hour to pass as I had to wait to collect my daughter also. I might just make it a weekly visit, if the weather allows. Birds in my village disappear once I step outside with the camera.
