Buy a 135 format? Posted in General Digital Photography chat |
...Having a poll on this is not going to change anything...K10D is correct in this... This topic, IMO, is purely subjective. For every reason to "up-size" the sensor, there's an equally (at least) valid reason not to. Boils down to opinion. Hard to quantify something like that. (And sometimes not worth the effort to try - as shown by the number of times this topic has resurfaced. While discussion is usually interesting, this topic seems to have been "discussed" so much that any points worth making have doubtless been made several times already. BUT, it's every one's prerogative to weigh in, or not.) The issue of photographers (pro or otherwise) thinking they need FF or not, is in no way related to the issue of whether or not Pentax should make them. That's a purely economic decision that none of us can affect. (Or effect, for that matter...) I selected the lenses as the reason I wouldn't be buying FF, but even that's not really right. While all the reasons you listed in the poll are valid, for me it boils down to not having any compelling reason to. So why bother... |
weather in your local area tonight. Posted in General Photographic Chat |
...I really feel sorry for you, guys. Now, would anybody be willing to help me shovel the couple of feet we have at my place?:PI'm also having a little difficulty generating very much sympathy for anyone with less than 18 inches or so of snow. (where it hasn't been blown into 4 foot drifts...) |

Photography adventure to polar bear capitol of the world?? Posted in General Digital Photography chat |
...heck yeah!! we could pitch some tents, and roast some marshmallows at my place!! (they get very hot, especially if you are one those people that lights them on fire...) so bring lots of Bailey's or Kahluha to dunk them in.... for safety reasons...ok? Speaking of safety... I know some people here like thier hard liquors... I do not recommend dunking flaming molten sugar products into shots of single malt scotch...there will be explosions and you'll be turning my yard into some kind of tent hospital triage center... and while you're running around ttrying to put out your eyebrows, I will drink your scotch...Good thinking - adding that disclaimer - your insurance agent just breathed a huge sigh of relief - but now you'll need to buy your own scotch. You might want to remind our European and American friends just what the average weather conditions are in Winnipeg in November before they start packing tents and such... |

[quote:3496ace15f="shim"]Can't see them ever introducing converters, because of the exposure problems. shimWhat problems?I did start a thread about this, but didn't get any answers, so seems that no one knows or they don't have any problems I've since bought a Pentax A 2X-S but haven't tried it on that one. shim[/quote] I didn't notice that thread or I might have replied... I have a Pentax AFA 1.7x TC, and I only lose a stop and a bit, as one would expect, and my 2X Tamron BBAR loses the 2 stops I would expect it to lose... I have no idea why yours should be behaving so differently... Perhaps defective? |

Bag buying advice Posted in General Digital Photography chat |
...only trouble is, I need to go up a couple of sizes...What a dilemma  I'm there too though, and I'm trying to decide whether to upsize, or just be more selective about which lenses to take with me... It's nice to have them all, but realistically, I almost never use more than 1 or 2 of them on any given day. (and if I keep satisfying my LBA, restricting myself with a smaller bag just may save my back someday... ) |

Date issues with the K20d Posted in Troubleshooter |
...Eventually I'll be able to geotag the RAW files too...I must've missed that one when I was doing my own research... I have a logger and geotag my jpegs, but don't currently do raws... What s/w do you use to geotag raw files ? And does the geo info in the exif follow when converting to jpg? (I use adobe or Capture One LE) Thanks, Jamie |

Late Update... The guy I was dealing with on the phone was apparently having a bad day (week? month?) and was acting "not very nicely" according to the Pentax rep I complained to at the recent Photographic show in Toronto... The rep I spoke to (a sales rep) directed me to another person on the floor (their 'techie guy', he said) who wrote me a note to take with me to present the next time I'm in the Mississauga area (where their Canadian office is). When I mentioned that I don't get up that way often, he said it didn't matter, to come when I could, they wanted to "make it good" Feeling better now... Thanks, Pentax |

Mains adapter for K20d Posted in General Digital Photography chat |
£60 appears to be the going rate for the genuine item, but I see no reason why you should not use a generic power supply of the correct voltage, amperage, polarity and plug (other than warranty issues maybe). And on that note, does anyone have an original to look at that would post the voltage, amperage, polarity and plug information? Thanks |

(No, this isn't a troll, just a feeble attempt at humour) I just noticed that the shiny metal endcap on my Optio M40 is rattling, because one of the screws holding it in is gone and the other loose... Pentax Canada wants, and I quote "Part#76990 A224 S Screw 1.4x2.0, $2.25 ea. plus shipping $10.00 plus taxes"... When I emailed back and mentioned that it was under warranty, they responded that I had to package it up, send it to them with proof of purchase, whereupon they'd fix it and post it back, probably costing me and them a total of about $30... I emailed them back and if they were to mail me the screw it would cost them $.50, but they would not. Argghh - I even offered to send them a self-addressed, stamped envelope with a photocopy of my purchase receipt, but they didn't even respond to that one... SO, does anyone have a dead Optio M-whatever (I think they probably used the same screws) which they can send me one of the screws from? I'd be happy to send a self addressed envelope along with funds to cover postage... Jamie |

New K20D....a question...it rattles... Posted in Pentax Digital SLRs |
It does actually say in the manual that the camera can make these sort of noises and explains that it's to do with SR. It says it very clearly actually within the first couple of pages if I remember correctly. Personally I've never noticed it, apart from when I'm in live view with SR turned on.Just read that last night - page 15... |
New K20D - DA* Zooms - Slow Focus ??? Posted in Troubleshooter |
Have had this problem with my 50-135, and it was not in the cold, it also squeaks a bit occasionally! We had the 16-50 out in Chicago on Friday morning at -13c with no problems. Not sure if this helps, but do know that it is not only the cold that can cause the problem!I'm inclined to think it wasn't the cold, since it works fine sometimes in the cold... And, it wasn't the batteries. We're used to batteries performing poorly when cold - though the temperature was -15 outside, the camera was nowhere near that cold as it had been in the house, and in the warming-up car for about 10 minutes, by which time the interior temp of the car was probably +15 or so, so the batteries shouldn't even have dropped below +10 or so... I'm also occasionally getting the squeaking Unlocker mentions... I'll keep a close eye on it... John, Matt, Pete (and all you other warm-weather sissies  ) : -15 isn't unnormal, and this is southern Ontario - When I lived in Northern Ontario (about 600km north of here) it was -45 for 7 or 8 mornings in a row that winter, and usually averaged about -25 during the day... Not sure what it was at night, it was too cold to go out anyway...:) That's why I'm way "down here" in the south now  And there's a lot more Canada north of that... Jamie |
New K20D - DA* Zooms - Slow Focus ??? Posted in Troubleshooter |
OK - after buying a K20D to replace my K10D (which had a broken LCD screen) I've had a funny thing happenning... My DA* zoom (either one) seems to, when you first turn the camera on, move so slowly as to seem like it's not actually focusing. The first time this happenned, I switched to manual focus and took the shot. It was a grab shot, and I took several with some minor focus adjustments and switched the camera off, promptly forgetting about the slow focus... The second time, I didn't switch to manual focus, and instead relied on the clutch and manual focused anyway, and took the shot. However, I started playing with things to see what was happenning... After rotating the focus back and forth several times, it suddenly started working as if nothing had ever been wrong. But after switching it off, letting it sit for a bit and then re-trying, it did it again... and does regularly, but not consistently. Admittedly, it's cold here (-15 deg C - it's February in Canada after all) but I don't think that's the issue - the camera didn't feel especially cold or anything, it had only sat in the car for a bit while the car was warming up... What's goin' on? Any theories? Happenned to anyone else? Jamie |

Wellll....... Actually, I was considering sourcing a new screen and attempting to fix it and use it as a backup.... Ask me again in a couple weeks  |
How much to replace a K10D LCD screen? Posted in Troubleshooter |
As to how it happened? Apparently, as good as the Lowepro Slingshot 200 is, either I had way too much packed in it, or the padding doesn't do as much as I'd like. Don't get me wrong, I'm not really blaming the bag, but hey, I didn't do it... The bag, packed and zipped, fell a couple feet from a chair to the floor, and landed just right (or wrong I guess :() Maybe something was packed behind the LCD screen or something, I didn't notice... Anyway, the next time I turned it on, there it was... Oh well, I've picked up a K20D, and though I didn't need them, the body alone was the same price as the body with both kit lenses... They'll probably be for sale very soon... Now I just gotta figure out the lens focus adjustment thing - not sure I need it, but I wanna know how to do it anyway... Broke but happy, Jamie |
Jessops and Pentax - again Posted in General Digital Photography chat |
...Success is simple. Have a shop in an easily accessible location, employ knowledgeable unbiased staff, stock kit that people want to buy, and sell it at a competitive price...Sure - that parts simple. :D It's the making money at it that's harder... ...Oh, I forgot to mention, you'll need a shed load of money to start with unless you can find a bank to borrow from...Inventory, wages, advertising, the list goes on... Hard to imagine any "new" independents opening up anytime real soon... We don't have Jessops here, but the big box electronic stores (Future Shop, Best Buy) have done pretty much the same thing in Ontario. The only "real" camera shop (local to me) has just discontinued the Pentax line - now it's at least an hour east (two west) to find a brick & mortar shop that actually has Pentax stock... Jamie |

If you are talking about the GPS (which I think you are) take a look on the Pentax Polish web site.Maybe I'm missing something, but from the looks of that (and the google translation) it's basically a bluetooth GPS receiver/logger. Though not Pentax, they've been out for quite a while... I have one from Qstarz that cost less than C$90.00 14 months ago. It came with software that will update your exifs with Lat/Long based on the time the photo was taken. Just make sure the camera time is synced with GPS time. Is the Pentax model rumoured to do more ? Direct communication with camera? Jamie |
What scanner? Posted in Pentax Film SLR Cameras |
Digital is easier, but you don't think the same about a shot. This isn't a hardware, media or format issue. It's strictly software. Your software...:D:D When not pressed for time, I try to shoot more deliberately (which for me means much more slowly), and I like to think that the lack of quantity shooting this way is made up for, at least a little bit, but higher quality images. |
