Still using 35mm, and usually dissapointed with Scans CD provided. Only improvement would be a way to scan slides too. Still hasn't stopped me ordering one 5 mins ago!
Pentax in the movies
Posted in General Photographic Chat
One of the regulars on the american Pentax forum pointed out that the helmet cam lenses on the marines in Aliens are Pentax 110 lenses. Had a screencap and all to prove it!A quick search:

Just used the HTLM TAG: "size=9:de1123c39d"Your Signature Test"/size:de1123c39d" Note that TAG need to be in [] brackets, so replace " with [ This came from another forum member some years ago, so note sure what the HEX number following means.

Pentax K5 IIS - really reliable?
Posted in Pentax Digital SLRs
Is this the case with different SD cards? If there was a write error to the card, this could happen. Is the preview photo on the screen OK? is it just when you go back to the picture or upload to a PC?
My K5 just arrived! First Impressions!

Is this a dangerous thing to do? Ive been testing the camera out over the last 24 hours and it works like a dream. Can someone tell me how to do it exactly:oops:?Run many an update: Fully change a battery, while said battery is charging, download the latest firmware (usually an exe file), run to unpack the BIN file. Copy the BIN file to the root of an SD card that has been formatted in the camera. Insert the fully charged battery (check camera turns on OK, then turn it off!), insert the SD card with the BIN file on it. Press the Menu button and hold down, then turn the camera on - follow the instruction on teh LCD. When the process is complete, turn the camera off and then on again and format the card in camera to remove the BIN file. Job done!
Video Capture - Pentax or ??
Posted in Pentax Digital SLRs
I think much depends on your budget and the resolution you require of your output. The K7 does tend to get hot after recording for 5 minutes, my experiance with the K5ii only extends to just over 6 minuites and the temperature indicator did not appear on the screen. Also the K5 had full 1080HD where as the K7 had an odd top resolution so I kept it as 720p or lower. A quick listed 16 results that might be worth a further look.

The K30 does not have facility for an external microphone. This might be a problem for sound quality. The K5 has generally been marked down as it produces AVI format video files and the format is seen as dated. However I have been very staisfied with the output from my K7 and very recently the K5IIs. I have only noticed the audial click associated with the AVI codex used on one of my playback devices (and Archos 48). I believe that the K5 would be the better option due to the facility for an external mic, quality of sound will be significantly improved with a good external mic (mine cost 70, I was after one for 140 but could not justify the extra cost).
K01 Or Q?
Posted in Pentax Mirrorless Cameras
I recently loaned my eldest (9 years old) my MV with a manual 80-200 lens, most of the day the camera remained on a monopod. He is quite strong, but weight of the kit does need to be taken into consideration. I am also sure that when he starts using my K7 he is going to want access to a few of my lenses, and probably the one I am using will be his desire!

Is photoshop ruining photography
Posted in General Digital Photography chat
No, advertisers are ruining the integrity of photographers! Digital darkroom remains as essential to photography today as the Fuji lab does to 35mm film. My counter question would be: when does use of photoshop turn a photograph into a painting?
Storage Advice
Posted in General Photographic Chat
I know the history, it's calibrated to my lenses and I don't know when the time will come. Guess that's the issue. Also, K7s don't seem to be selling on the forum that well. Thanks for the advice, I think I will go with out and keep a charged battery in. I will have as a backup camera then.
110 lenses

Why bother with a Q10 when SRS are selling Q's at such low priceI love the look and the colour options! The Q never caught my imagination, however, the Q10 holds my attention like my little 110 does.
Storage Advice
Posted in General Photographic Chat
Just ordered my K5IIs, so I am going to need to store the K7 till my son is responsible to move on from the Pentax MV I currently loan him! What advice would you have for storing, I don't want to loose the settings nore have to reset the time date etc. If I store without the battery in, how long does the camera 'remember' the settings? I have the dry place to store and suitable body cap so any additional advice would be much appreciated.

Windows 8, 32 bit or 64
Posted in General Digital Photography chat
New motherboards and fast DDR3 RAM is optimised for processing large files, so is the way to go. Also a new motherboard will give you SATA III (SSDs fly on SATA III!). Also, Windows 8 allows for software RAID (make several smaller hard disks look like 1 larger disk). Two hard disks RAIDed will perform slightly faster than 1 Harddisk of the same size. I would also always recomend 64bit OS. It is worth noting that more than 4 oores on a CPU is not really worth it (though the OS will use them, most software will run on only one CPU and at most, for high end gaming, will use 3). AMD is good Value. Also I belive that Photoshop can make use of the processing power (GPU) on some graphics cards.
MZ5n - Pop-up flash not popping up.

I may give it a try, apparently it is due to a plastic pin that deteriorates over time. The pin can be replaced, however one post else where recommend an allowance of two hours for the repair and to be prepared for frustration and eye strain! So I would first need to obtain a new pin! Suggestions of a non working ebay purchase is a sound idea. If I do give it a go, I will document the steps!

Thank you for the suggestions, I will take a look at the Haig mount and may be give that a go. How accurate is its tracking? I would be looking at exposures of 30 mins or more.

I once made a spring for my K10 grip after taking it appart to fix a stuck pin and watching one of the springs 'bounce' off the work surface ! It was quite a successfull repair:P!
