Could anyone please advise?

What sort of operating range can one reasonably expect from this remote?

What circumstances could affect that range?

Many thanks,

Roger.

It's IR so doesn't have a long range and the further you are away from the camera the better your aim has to be. About 10 feet is about the absolute maximum.

Thanks for that, Steve.

I'm thinking of setting-up to capture garden bird images (initially), remotely from the conservatory.

What could be an alternative device for someone a fairly tight budget..........?

Thanks again,

Roger.

The cheapest option is to use a wired trigger. A 100M range wireless trigger from eBay will be around fourteen pounds link. Canon and Pentax have the same 2.5mm stereo jack.

The wired version can be built for under five pounds. A 2.5mm stereo jack from Maplin and a reel of twin core bell cable plus a push to make switch will fire the camera.

Wireless is the way to go.

Pro Canon use a different jack, so be careful if you order a Canon make or "designed for".

I have the 'F' - it's good for what it's intended for. Another issue with IRs is they don't work very well outside in sunlight.

Get a cheap wireless system. Plenty to choose from.

It seems to me that your camera will be in a fixed position as you will be further away from it. Is that correct? If so then why not put on a non AF lens and pre-focus the camera and let the "catch in focus" prog. do its thing. I once set up a brick in the bird bath, set the focus on that with the camera on a tripod and left it to it. When I came back I had 36 photos of birds. Some with water splashing around as they took their daily bath. No extra expense and you can have a cup of tea while you wait..
Mine were done a long time ago on a Chinon CP9AF. Sorry for that but that's where I started.
CHEERS Vic.
PS. You don't say which model camera you have. I take it that it has the "catch in focus" prog.
Vic.
PPS. I failed to mention that once focussed I removed the brick before I fired the shutter.

If you have a K3, the FluCard and a smartphone with the app....

If not, then a wired trigger, however remember the camera port has to be open for that and then you will not be water resistant.

not wishing to hijack the thread but i think this is relevant. how do you stop the camera going in to "sleep" mode as i have an RF remote but when i trigger it the camera does not "wake up" which it normally does when you half press manually.
odd lens or 2

You can set it to stay on in the menu or (I think) sleep after 30 mins.

Trying to decide about ordering these remotes. I already have the Yongnuo RF-602's but these are better, £15.38 from China link

They will fire the camera via the jackplug, but are really for flash.
