FS: METZ MECABLITZ 44 AF-1 FLASH UNIT - PENTAX FIT
Posted in Classified Adverts
I am interested as I have been thinking about a 3rd unit for remote flash. Can I ask if it is too basic for your level and interest or too much?

I had this same issue on this lens, worked fine with screw-drive (tested on MZ5n), cost 120 for repare at Johnsons - works a treat now - better than before!
Astro Photography - Equitorial Mount
Posted in General Digital Photography chat
I am looking for a motorised Equitorial Mount with Pole Star alignment scope. I do not need any form of go-to function, just something to keep up with the earth's rotation and allow for long exposures. Does anyone have an suggestions for a reasonably priced make/model?
MZ5n - Pop-up flash not popping up.
Posted in Pentax Film SLR Cameras
I have a problem with my MZ5n where the flash does not pop up - it is like a spring in the mechanisum has broken, there is no functional issue with the flash. This is the second time I have had this failure, the first time, some 15 years ago I think, I had the camera repaired via the shop I purchased it from. My question is, is this now a Harrow Technical repare job or is it somethign that I can fix myself by taking the flash housing appart and re-assembling? I have the tools, but wondered if anyone else had experianced this type of failure and has any advice on attempting a self repair.

[quote:3496ace15f="davem"]Did you know that this will also work on the Pentax with an adapter available via eBay. One lens that can be used on two systems that is good value:D[/quote Do you mean Pentax Q?
Flash and wide aperture

I have the Metz 48 and 58 flashes and both expose correctly at F2.8, I haven't gone for a wider apature.

Anyone have one of these lying about that needs a good home? I have seen new for 219, but not looked at eBay yet. My price for a second hand with completely clean front optic would be 180, or there abouts.
Fast SD cards for K5?
Posted in Pentax Digital SLRs
I have always gone for San Disk cards, from the days of CF - always been reliable and always been able to recover images and video when accidently deleted! I think the camera can only handle up to 32GB cards though. Just a note, though I am not a burst photo freek, I havn't noticed any different in performance from my Class 6 to Class 10 cards in the camera.
K-5ii & K-5iis REVIEW
Posted in Pentax Digital SLRs
Thank you for the link, I have been waiting for a review. For me there is both encouragement and dissappointment: I was hoping for better live view AF as in the K30 - dissappointed, also looking at samples I think that noise is even better controlled in the K30, however no change from the K5 - a little dissappointed; I was hoping for more accurate focus in low light - encouraged. I was also surprised, I own the K7 so an upgrade this certainly is, however I have been focussing on the K5II. Now I am looking at the K5IIs as this will address much of the issues I have with my K5, also a FF Pentax would have to go some way to beat the resolution if it has AA filter in place - I think it may not have the AA filter, they did it with the 645D - yet another Pentax first! This review has not changed my mind in upgrading my 3 year old K7, however it has made the choice of the K5IIs a more logical one.
Focassing - Lens or Camera?
Posted in General Photographic Chat
I was just passing Jessops and tried a non pentax camera. The focus was so fast and quiet that I wasn't even sure that the camera was focussing at all! It was not all roses, but it showed me what is possible. The K5ii/iis is on my shopping list (money boxes already stacking up). However, this got me thinking, I have one lens the 18-135 that focuses much faster and, it feel, more accurately than any other lens I have. So how much of an improvement in focussing speed will I get from my K7 to the K5ii with the same lenses? The camera delivers the accuracy, but is it the lense that delivers the focussing speed? I will settle for more accurate focusing, but will I be focussing at the same speed? I know hunting should be reduced so lets asume no hunting in the first place. Any thoughts?
Does the Q have focus confirm in manual

Maybe the Q10 will rectify this. For me this would also be a deal breaker as I would get it for extreme telephoto which would mean the adaptor and my longer lenses.
Photographing street lighting

Two points from me: 1) ISO 1600 on the K10 is very limited and the results are likely to be very noisy, and not just in the shaddow detail. The other point with the K10 is the dynamic range is more limited so exposure will be more important and use of RAW advisable. 2) Fixing white balance may give you some issues, I would use a grey card and take a propper custom white balance reading for each shot. Or ensure that the grey card is included in the shot to allow for tuning of the white balance during post processing/RAW development. Without this, you will be guessing the Kelvin light value through the rear LCD!

Shot 1 is my favourite, however I would have liked the wing tips! Shot 4 seems to have excessive noise in the sky (mostly top left) Shot 5 the bird is a little under exposed, could use a little shadow lift or use of levels with a mask over the sky. Shot 7 has an uncomfortable halo - is this too much sharpening? Also the angle is a little odd, wondering if a +90degree rotation might change this.
What do you value more . . . your camera or your mobile phone?

Eye-Fi Cards already send photos over the net as soon as you take them  Nothing to do with the make of camera. It does, and the premium includes Cloud storage for an anual fee. But it is WiFi, not phone network and you need to set the card up in a PC. Samsung have already stared building this in to their cameras and have made the first Android O/S powered camera.

I have been using Paintshop X4 and never found it wanting! I also use Gimp in the office and that does a good job too!

I answered 'No', however the trend towards wireless enabled cameras may change this! Would you want someone hacking your camera while it's in your bag and deleting all your photos? Not saying it would be possible, just thinking out loud really! Imagin a pro camera capable of sending selected photos via 4G straight to the photo desk from where ever you are, or sending every photo to cloud storage as you take them. No need to carry a laptop or tablet, just the camera.

[quote:3496ace15f="sponner"] sigma 17-50 f2.8 DA* 50-135 (love the range of this one worried about sdm motor problems?) DA* 60-250 f4 quote] I have the 50-135 and it is by far my favourite lens, though my most used lens is now the 18-135, mainly due to the speed of focus and the compact size. I have had an SDM failure with my 50-135, however I think the later manufactured versions are more reliable. I had the motor replaced including sending the lens in for about 129 I think. The replaced motor has been fine.
Pentax Q vs Digiscoping

Would you get better IQ out of the Q on a K mount lens, verses cropping on a K5 and using Photoshop/Genuine-Fractals to enlarge the pixel count in the image?
Pentax Q vs Digiscoping
Posted in Pentax Mirrorless Cameras
I don't have a Q but I do have an adapter that can turn any of my lenses into a scope, this works very well, turing a 50mm f.14 lens into a 5x scope and a 120-400zoom into a 12-40x scope. The stabilisation is very important on the hight magnification and atmospheric distortion is more of a problem also. the DA*50-135 makes a super 5-13.5x scope!

Quick Search : Canon EF 500mm f/4L IS II USM Lens US$11,000 (ca. 7,000+) Nikon 500mm f4 ED VR AF-S 5,865 Sigma 500/4.5 3,780 (on Amazon UK - note not 4,799) And you are missing one massive point with the 'one stop' comment, it's not about the ISO at all. People buy these lenses mainly for birding (and mostly on tripods so the weight is, for many, irrelevant) and you can not put a x1.7 TC on an f5.6 lens and retain AF - at least with any reliability). You can on an f4 or f4.5 lens because they stay under the f8 limit for these long lenses.I did miss the AF and teleconverters, point taken! Is it possible that with the new AF sensor with -3EV on the focus, it might?

This is about as disappointing an announcement as it could get. US$7,000 for the 560mm and only f5.6 !?Pentax (Dust and moisture resistent) is 5,999 and 3.04KG Just by way of example: the competition is: Canon's 600mm F4 (Dust and moisture resistent) is 10,900 and 3.92kg Nikon 600mm F4 is 7,000 and 5.9KG Sony N/A Sigma 500mm F4.5 is 4,799 and 3.15KG F5.6 to F4 is one stop difference so with the ISO performance of the K5, 1 stop is not really an issue. Also depth of field at 100 feet and F4 is about 1.33 feet, at F4.5 is 1.49 feet and at F5.6 is about 1.88 feet (for a 600mm lens).

Hmm think people on here have been moaning about af speed since the beginning of time. Now we have what looks like a significant increase people are saying its a poor upgrade...If the AF is on a par or better than the competition, then we may see more people out and about with a Pentax in their hands! All we need now is to get the camera into more highstreet shops so that people can see it and hold it. Maybe a little TV marketing as well!
