K-5 Mk II
Posted in Pentax Digital SLRs
I for one have already started saving. My K7 is 3 years old in January 2013. If the AF is significantly improved then that is the last tick in the box for me, now it really is worth the upgrade. I would have liked to see an articulated screen, but I guess it is less to go wrong/fall off/get water inside! Well done Pentax! Now all I need is for a K3/FF model so that I can convince my wife I could be spending a whole lot more on my next camera!:P

When using a DSLR there are only two rules. 1. get a manual lens and learn how to use it by... 2. RTFM  over and over and over trying out everything it offers and settling on what you like best. When I had my K10, I skipped most of the manual and read the Magic Lantern guide, made notes or had my camera in front of me. That way I ensured I understood all the settings and tried things out. It was invaliuable.

One issue I have not been able to resolve however with this k7, is how to get the skies more blue, as compared to my fuji or canon cameras, and none of those are SLR's. However I shoot landscapes in RAW, for the most part, so one can always adjust later. Two of my friends just bought the K5 and are very happy with their purchases. I have found a circular polarser very effective is raising the level of blue in skys.
WTB: Optio E90

Looking for a black Optio E90 to replace to one my son lost at the weekend. Well, he put it down and someone else picked it up while at Whipsnade Zoo on Sunday. Can anyone help? Can't find on line, though yet to check e-bay.

One option could be a . They are designed for telescopes, but depending on the lens you are using you may be able to get one to fit.

What is the point of such poor quality photographs  If Pentax made a camera that turned out stuff so bad you'd all be moaning!  :wink:I tried taking a photo using an Optio E90 and a Sigma 120-400mm lens with a Kenco telescope adaptor attached! The resuling magnification of the scope was 40x. My technique needs a little work, but the result was not so bad! I did it because I could!:P

I had no trouble on Saturday and even felt that I could have taken an extra lens other than the 18-135 and a 1.5 TC! Anyway, the 18-135 performed fantistically and there was even enough light to allow focussing with the TC attached 50% or the time! Even used the poloriser for some shots to bring out the sky and grass!

I was in the Olympic park yesterday and there were loads of spectators with DSLRs with largish lenses (70-200 and 70-300 by the look of them). If you want to carry a second lens just get your companion to carry it - everyone goes through a separate security channel. It's hard to see how they will be able to change the rules so drastically at this late stage.Thank you Philip, I have been getting a little stressed about this today. Your post is a welcome respite. I will post my experiance/observations following my Wimbledon outing tomorrow.

There is a project for this back in about 2000 that I signed up for as a potential tester. However the project never progressed. The prototype was a FF sensor that actually went where the film did and the equilivent of the film spool housed the electronics, processing engin (JPG only) and a USB port. Looked like a great idea at the time, think it was about a 2MP sensor!

I have just had an idea! I could take my film camera! They won't understand what it is! Or, I can take my DSLR camera with my 35mm lens attached and my 18-135 lens with my Kelco telescope adaptor attached and say its my telescope because I have very poor eyesight!

What about the controller? I can do a little programming so the processing engin could be up an runing in a few months (unless I am arrested trying to get into Wimbledon with my non-pro, 'that looks like a pro camera Sir.' camera!) Now, all we need is a good quality USB cable to attach my smart phone as the new 'DigiPRIME' processor.

(Anybody know how to make a shutter?):? Step 1::lol: I did some woodwork at school! How about a new rotery shutter, a bit like a fan, it will have 3 functions - a sensor cleanor (blow the dust off), a sensor cooler and a twin leaf shutter!8)

I am going to tennis tomorrow, looks like I will be up past midnight on this one, if there is no official clarification, then I will take the 135 and pass it if as a 35mm! Doubt security will have a clue! I think the pros are running scared that amateurs will produce better images! At least my tennis playing 8year old has the I10! So he will be able to prove he was there when he inherits the Olympic tax bill!

OK, that does it. I'm going to start a British camera company. The first thing we need is a name. (Anybody know how to make a sensor?):?Step 1: study paintent law; Step 2: give up and buy a company who already holds the paintents required; Step 3: give up and buy a company that produces sensors; Step 4: outsource manufacturing to a camera company who will outsource manufacturing to a manufacturing company who will steal your design and make it cheaper.
Lens suggestion needed for olympic games

The 60-250mm is quite a big lens, but in fact only measures 167.5mm long, without the hood of course. It shouldn't exceed 300mm, even with the hood. Thanks for the clarification, however does the lens extend in length as you zoom, or is it like the 50-135 in design? Remember it is the length of the lens plus the camera body. Are the security going to measure everything???I suspect that they may be using x-ray machines for bags (they internationaltionel flight style security) and you will have to put your camera in a try I expect. That's what I'm imaging anyway. I just hope I am not behindg behing someone videoing on an iPad!

You won't be allowed in with the 60-250! The restriction is lens + camera (don't even think about the lens hood!) must be 30cm or less long. I would seriously think about the Pentax 55-300, I can measure combination with my K7 later if you need to know how big this would be. However, I am thinking differently as I will be taking my 18-135 and possibly a 1.5x converter to the tennis - mostly this is due to the need for fast focus which the 18-135 is very capable of. Also if I need something closer then croping will be my option with cubic enlargement in Paintshop! This will also favour the sweet spot on the 18-135!
Siggy 150-500, DA*300, or something else
Posted in Lenses for Pentax Cameras
I have the older Sigma 120-400 HSM (i.e. no OS). It seems to focus rather well, however most lense become manual focus with even a 1.5x converter as the AF sensor generally stops working at somewhere between f5.6 and f6.3 (at lease on my K7). The only lens I have that seems consistent with my Kenco 1.5x converter in the Pentas 18-135 lens. Even my A*s cant keep up.

AMD Bulldozer 4/6 core, anybody?
Posted in General Photographic Chat
As greynolds999 states, you current PC looks OK, however you may benefit from a graphics card upgrade. A better reason to upgrade would be SATA 600 (if you want to use solid state hard drives), USB3 for external hard drives and support for DDR3 memory. One point to note, most programs are written to use one core, some can take advantage of 2 cores, very few (i.e. games) can use 3 cores. I do not believe that any programme will currently take advantage of 4 or more cores. The OS will however distribute processes across the cores so great for multi-tasking. If you want to speed up a PC, invest in a good solid state harddrive! It's what Windows 7 really wants!

Does anyone have any specific questions about the Pentax K-30 that they'd like answering?I really want to know more about the video capabilities, such as focus during video, internal microphone noise and the various resolutions/frame rates avaliable. Also how is the video white balance and apature/gain (ISO) control handled?

Re 16/77 segment metering: I took the specs from the Pentax website. I will ask Pentax to clarify. The K7 has 77 seals and 77 segment metering - it was a part of the marketing, all the 7's. The K5 is an upgrade!
