Very interesting to hear of your continuing experiences, and of course a great achievement that you kept up the enthusiasm for photography despite all the issues and difficulties you spoke of before. I have certainly read that FF is unforgiving in a number of ways, but mostly it would appear to ...

Martyn, what is it about the K5 that you feel makes it less ideal for landscapes. Is it about the camera & sensor, or is it to do with the available quality of ultra-wides you could use. I'm thinking, it must be easier to make a top notch 21mm or 24-70mm zoom for use on FF, then the equivalent APS-C...

First post. Upgrading

Hi all, thanks for the welcome and the replies. I will try and reply to you all at once. I have looked at the K-r as well, and my reading of the discussions is that the K-r has the better sensor, but the K20d is ergonomically better, and better built. For me photography is about the process, and ...

Another Oldie...

Cheers, chaps. Suspect I won't, Lottery win excepted, be weaned off the X5, John. Limited disposable income puts paid to that idea! Plus I would much prefer a mirrorless type, like the Lumix G3 or 5, rather than a big SLR. Shame Ricoh/Pentax don't do one. :( With respect to dust ingress, Drumm...

You will definitely see an improvement in image quality and resolution, but I would skip straight to the cameras with the 16MP sensor - K5, K30 or K50/K500. Much better at high ISO! ;P [Edit- the focus peaking in live-view on the K30/K50/K500 would also be useful if you are using old manual prime...

Taken from Wiki: Focus peaking is the name for an electronic display technology, which highlights the areas of sharpest focus in an image with a false-color halo. (The halo color is sometimes switchable according to the user's preference.) This technology originated with professional videograph...

Hello world! From Almada, Portugal.

Hi Saulo, welcome to Pentax User. The camera body shake reduction system is a great feature on Pentax - as it is part of the camera sensor mechanism you are only paying for it when you buy the body. Every lens after that will now benefit from the shake reduction. This applies equally to the most mod...

Hi!

Even if it's a nice side camera, there is no viewfinder, and the sensor is small (1" I think), which is not good enough (to me) for a main camera.

Just another old fogey...

If you can find a Pentax to try for yourself it'll provide all the evidence you might need. I have a K5 but have owned KX and KR's. The newer K30 and K50 have very high specs with the absence of a top LCD. the ultrasonic sensor cleaning and quieter shutters of the heavier K5 and K3 models. A use...

Great advice, thanks. I'll have a wee look at the others you mentioned. The quieter shutters are pause for thought though. More investigating to be done I fear..lol. Im new user to Pentax

In what way do apertures work differently ? I was not aware of this. Frank is talking of medium format, where the bigger sensor gets less DOF. Apertures work the same way, but a smaller aperture will be needed to get the same DOF. If you've got used to f16 giving enough DOF with APSC it might not b...

New member pondering a new Pentax camera?

the k3ii is more than capable in low light i have found Both the K-3 and the K-5iis are very good in low light. The original K-5 is not so good, but this is nothing to do with the sensor. The AF on the original K-5 cannot cope in low light, so if you are considering a K-5, make sure it's a K-5ii o...

New member pondering a new Pentax camera?

If you compare anything to a K10 with its CCD sensor it'll be found wanting. It took me six months to get used to the CMOS sensor in the K5 and now I love it. But it's not for beginners and the JPEGs straight from the card are very so-so. That's one of the reasons (I think) why Canon are so popular ...

New member pondering a new Pentax camera?

Well I tend to think that 'more is more' . It's true that a number of features built into high end cameras these days may never have any practical use found for them by an owner. For example, I have never used Composition Adjust (sensor shift), AF calibration or horizon correction, nor Tav...

I think you have to hand some control over to the computer at some stage, unless you are actively taking control of the lighting with external flashes. Advances in metering and other automatic aides are the future. Focusing and metering are two areas where the computer can make judgements and ca...

Agreed on all that Richard .... It's good to be talking about some of these differences and choices for a change. So often it's easy on these forums to get the impression that the only important questions are about the sensor, very high ISO performance, resolution, and small differences in size and ...

To the original poster, I recommend a K3II. I've recently replaced my well used K3. It has all the build quality, quieter shutter, better sensor clean, sockets, twin card slots etc of the K3. It, in my experience to date, autofocuses better (AFC actually works), many more keepers including birds...
