Finchale Priory Undercroft

I find that the HDR version looks more realistic, at least in dynamic range terms, as I feel it reproduces the natural DR compression that our eyes/brain would perceive after having adjusted to the dim light level. Perhaps a small overall reduction in brightness would add more mood ......? The 2n...

Bellows Macro

I believe you'll be able to work out maximum magnfication ratio by taking a picture of a ruler. If I'm right, 1:1 magnification would allow you to have 36mm of the ruler in focus if placed horizontally in the image (since the sensor size is 36mm x 24mm).

First proper outing with the K1 and also the Tokina 20-35mm

Thanks all, appreciate the comments. It's a cracking lens and I like the limited wide focal length it offers. Do you think there's an extra bit of image quality with full frame? ... Some of the samples I've seen with it on Flickr didn't convince me but these look great. I think the full frame sen...

Priory interior with the Pentax A 16mm f2.8

Some more shots of the interior of Great Malvern Priory taken with the K1 mkII and SMC A 16mm f2.8 (click for bigger image on Flickr)... 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. ...although it may seem the ideal subject for a lens like this it's really not as easy as I imagined! Selecting th...

A few recent Macro's

A few different Macro shots from recent trips. I've been experimenting using the K3's built in flash with varying degrees of diffusion in the form of Magic Tape until I get a Speedlight/ (I bought one of those lighting rings, it's about as much use as a chocolate fireguard outdoors) Nowhere near the...

Maidenhead

Thank you for your comments to D-F, Stuart, Karlo and Nigel. Nigel, to answer your query, the MX-1 does have some simple options for D-range Settings - I had them set at Highlight Correction = Auto and Shadow Correction = On. I also applied some selective fill light in PaintShop Pro to bring out...

Dead tree & some photomatix HDR

Hi Serge - I tend to try and be real to the original scene, bearing mind our eyes do perceive things in a different way to the camera sensor - so no2 (which happens to be one of the Realistic settings for me), and maybe as I recall perhaps a little more 'punch' to it.

A few shots with a few samyangs

There's gold in here Derek, however I hope you don't mind me making a critical observation? They are all under-exposed and would benefit from the levels bringing up in post processing. I think you have deliberately gone for a dark mood, but it's at the expense of details in the shadows, which is a...

A few shots with a few samyangs

Cheers guys, I was kind of going for a dark mood as it was pretty dark anyway, to be honest, the foreground on these were nearly black, and I just didnt like the look of lifting more, I have no doubt that the sensor would give more, I will give it a go. Genuinely your thoughts and observations a...

Holy Trinity, Stratford upon Avon

Thanks Smudge I was a bit concerned how the roof timbers are a bit skewed. In Lightroom the TS isn’t listed in the lens compensation so I applied another Samyang 24mm which may account for the barrel distortion because it was quite significant. Thinking now the lens is offset from the sensor so prob...

Hollywood walk....

Thanks again Guys - it seems that no.5 is the favourite, a shot I probably couldn't have managed without the superb articulating screen of the K1 (and I though it was a gimmick at launch). No.2 was almost unusable out of camera, but bringing out the shadows and dropping back the highlights made it a...

First real Macro attempt

I wrote the following a few years ago for my local camera club members. Hope it helps. Most photographers will come across the term macro or macro photography sooner or later. This article explains the various ways of producing macro photographs using everything from very cheap, to sometimes v...

Artichoke

Beautifully seen and processed, Roger. There's a lot going on there, great rythm and harmony. I'm planning on putting some artichokes in the garden, I will definitely look at them through a sensor if they work out.

Looks like a late evening sky captured on a dusty sensor at f/22 and low speed! And/or perhaps ICM? Philip

Impressive. How many years had those photons been travelling before they hit your sensor?? Steve

And all done without the latest huge sensor, gazillion megapixels, super bells and whistles camera. It shows yet again that what really counts is talent, skill and imagination. Steve

Water sculpture, Seaham Hall Hotel, Co. Durham

2nd image for me is the pick and shows what the sensor in the K10 is capable of. I owned a K-m a good few years ago and always loved the quality of landscape images it produced, I think the sensor was the same 10mp one as in the K10. Not very good in low light, but horses for courses and excellent ...

Cleave Hill Macro

Thanks Derek, Thank you for your kind feedback, I did intentionally go, good - better - best :D with the first 3 Yes, there is a dust bunny just visible, I'll clean the sensor, don't think I've cleaned it since I've had it :-) so its probably about time !!
