It depends how close to the action you are. The 55-300 is a bit of a hunter when focussing too. What other options do you have?

Great set Dan, I was there last year and had a great day. I only had the Sigma 70-200 f2.8 at the time so no real length but still managed to get some shots I was happy with (check my Flickr). Because the puffins are so used to people wandering around they walk right past you.
I managed a few in flight but really needed the length then and it shows. Did you take the monster lens with you and if not what did you use for these?

If you have an iPhone I recommend TrueDoF it you input your focal lens' length then you use the slider for aperture and it will display the approximate DoF.

I have a Manfrotto 804RC2 and it has degree markers on it to ensure your head is level. Providing the legs are leveled with the bubble. No too expensive either.

I too had a stroke of luck recently, I "won" a DA* 50-135 for £235 that was described as having SDM failure expecting to fork out for the repair. When it arrived it works perfectly!

I have noticed the difference in the buttons too, They don't feel quite the same quality to me. And don't get me started on the strap! It's crap! I had the same strap ion my K-7 and after 100,000 shots it is still in OK nick. The one on my K-5iis feels lower quality and is already badly fraying, shockingly poor quality.
IQ and AF on the other hand are exceptional and as for high ISO I daren't use the K-7 above 800 but the 5iis is awesome even up to 6400.
