I am going to take some snaps at the Cycling event in Sheffield tomorrow night - Weds 24th July.

Was wondering if the DA 55-300mm would be my best bet focal length wise?

It depends how close to the action you are. The 55-300 is a bit of a hunter when focussing too. What other options do you have?

Andrew, I used the 17-70 at the Olympics and found that quite good for the triathlon bikes. If you can get them head on then the 55-300 should be ok if you pre focus, you may struggle for panning shots with this though as you'll be quite close to the action.

DA 17-70, 18-135 or maybe the Tamron 17-50 which at f2.8 should be plenty fast?

May go with the 17-70 then George, mind you Tamron is fast and if it is a bit grey again?

Deffo take the Tammy, for the fast action shots. If you are a long way from the action then the 55-300 will be OK for fast shutter stills.

Will pack a couple I think, that way I can fiddle about depending on my vantage point!

The Tammy sounds a good idea looking how dull it is now I'll probably take the sigma 50-150 2.8 as well.

I'll drop you a text tomorrow as it would be good to say hello !

Have you got the option of taking two cameras Drew? If so, the Tammy on one and the 55-300 on the other would be my choice. If not, I would go with the 17-70 if you're only taking a single lens.

Do you have an over the shoulder type strap? If so, you'll hardly notice you're carrying two cameras!

If it's definitely one only, I think the 17-70 will offer greatest flexibility and least restriction. Obviously it's a bit slower in aperture than the Tamron, but that shouldn't be a problem with the K-5.
