I've got a no-name one 1500 mAh for EUR 15.50 incl. p+p.
No problems with it so far and I couldn't say that I noticed a difference to the original Pentax one.

Doesn't it look like JPEG artefacts?
Did you shoot in RAW? Does it look like that when you zoom in to 100% in the original pic?

I doubt it, as P-TTL does use the sensors in the camera. And from what you say it seems the flash sensors are o.k. (A mode) and P-TTL isn't.

What did you shoot indoors? What lens did you use?

We have a Flash Photography section in the forum where you might find some tips and hints.
You also can get the Digital SLR and P-TTL flash guide from our own MattMatic (see here). I have jut read it and think it's worth the small expenditure. (I don't normally try to sell things to new forum members in the first post, believe me. But that guide really is good, even if I don't get a cut from Matt for selling it :lol

But if you post in the Flash Photography section you might find someone who has some experience with the Jessops 360 flash gun.

It seems they are keen on selling and not much else...
Overall I have been underwhelmed by Shortcut's performance so far. I really have to think hard if I go the upgrade route with them or resort to the German distributor (though that would mean to get used to the German commands. I wish I could still deal with ISL directly.
