Aiki,

yes, that's Riga. What a wonderful day it was, we were going from our hotel to a meeting and I think we all would have gladly skipped the meeting and went on to explore Riga a little closer. We didn't have much time on the trip.

Mhuni,

it is the LX3. You can find a few pics from my friends here: http://picasaweb.google.com/nadiababkina2009/RondaneNorway# (but I'm not sure that all were made with the LX3, take a look at the "more info" link).
But seeing the original pics and being able to zoom in is much better...

If I don't remember to report back, give me a prod.

Thanks Mhuni!

If I remember correctly it isn't heavily cropped, probably a bit at the bottom to get rid of the concrete blobs I was crawling on. It was taken at 300 mm, and it was moored at the quayside. So no danger involved, really.

Thanks Hyram, I appreciate the offer.
I won't have much time to go out photographing. And my friends I'm staying with have a newly acquired bridge camera, a Panasonic. So if the withdrawal gets too tough there is some mild remedy at hand.

You are right!
How fitting that I took that shot in Tallinn

Digital SLRs are a blessing as well as a curse.
In the old days all you could do yourself (without entertaining a darkroom) was taking the photo. For the rest you had to rely on the photo lab.
Professionals, of course, did all the gimmicky things that we now do on the computer in their darkroom. If you look at the names of the tools in Photoshop almost all of them come from the darkroom world:
Unsharp mask, dodge, burn, sponge tool, gradation curves...

I do cherish the possibilities that I have now. It only depends on me, my skills with the software (they replace the darkroom skills) and my imagination.
It also changed the way in which I see the shot I am about to take. I have a pretty good imagination of how it turns out after doing the processing; the image is formed in my mind first and then I frame the shot. The raw shot might not look as good as it could have but the final result after post processing does look better (at least to me) than what the best raw shot would have looked like.

The time spent on a single shot varies greatly, it can be a minute or an hour.

All in all, though, the quality of the prints I get by just downloading a shot, about a minute of fiddling in the raw converter and another minute afterwards in Photoshop is head and shoulders beyond what I used to get out of photo lab enlargements.

Well, I now know what my best shot ever looks like. Thanks Martin.
As I can't do any better I don't have a camera anymore

The K20 is sent off for service, the *istD doesn't like playing stand-in and stumps with it's feet, throwing one tantrum after the next.

On Monday I'll travel to (hopefully) sunny Hampshire for the working week (without camera...:cry. So even if I can sweet talk the *istD in working again there's not much time for more shots.

Martin, I'm honoured by the camera phone quote, I'll print it out and put it in a safe place. (I doubt it is true, though, but thanks all the same).
And my phone is a Siemens one, that already tells you that it is an older model. It does have a camera but I haven't used it much. In true spirit of this competition, here is my best mobile phone shot ever:

Good luck to all of you and fun judging to Martin,

Wow Dirk, that's a big project, no wonder you didn't have time!

This leads to the question, of course, when the first Pentax User Forum workshop will take place in your studio

Good to know that you are in good health and that there is no danger of you getting bored anytime soon.
