Thanks Hyram!

I have won once, so it is not as bad as it seems

Now, why haven't I won more often? Well, this competition is judged by individuals, with different tastes and preferences. You can see that clearly when you choose a winner for the running competition and then compare with the choice of that week's judge. (Having said that, very rarely it happens that I absolutely disagree; normally my #2 or #3 favourite is winning instead of #1 or I can understand the judges choice when I read the comments).

But I take all this as a positive. It's good that we have individual tastes and it is very educational to read the judges comments (I always do that with the competition thread in another browser tab to see the pic that is talked about).

Another reason is that there usually is very strong competition and the judge has a variety of great entries to choose from.

It won't hold me back from taking part... And looking at the number of entries for the last competition only serves to strengthen my view that it is second place that one should be after...

Here's another one from the same beach as in my entry for the Sea & Shore competition. This time there is only one boat in the picture.

Well judged, Duncan. Congratulations to the winners and to you again, Duncan, for setting an obviously inspiring theme!

Prieni, from the title, subject, and your avatar I’m guessing you are involved with undersea diving. I like the abstract nature of this shot with its interesting pattern of colours, textures and reflections. It certainly makes for an interesting piece of visual art, but it’s a little too abstract for me as I’m having to guess at the link to the theme. An imaginative interpretation anyway.
Thanks for that critique. I didn't want to put any explanations in text as this is a photo competition (there are other fora on the net for writing competitons). Your guess, however, was pretty close.

My entry shows a CTD (instrument to measure Conductivity and Temperature of the water together with the pressure (and therefore the Depth at which the instrument currently is hanging). Around the CTD we have (in this case) 24 plastic bottles (10 litres each) that can be closed while the instrument is at the desired depth. This way we get the water samples on board. The photo was taken shortly after the CTD was set out.

You captured that bird nicely indeed. What is lacking for "great" pictures is the background. For me it's too distracting from the star of the scene.

I know how difficult it is to get such good captures of birds in flight (I hardly ever succeeded in taking a picture that really satisfied me, now that I write that I doubt I succeeded even once) and you made a good job of that.

I love the bird and the sunlit feathers on pic #2 the most, I think.

Very good, Jonathan. Good focus and nice bokeh. Must say no. 2 is my favourite.
Is that photo No. 2 or the No. 2 in the first shot?

Difficult decision indeed. I pondered the K10 a while but as I had my *istD since 2003 and am most likely to jump another few generations I went for the K20. I'm sure that both are a big step up and whatever you decide you will be happy with it. Considering that your decision is not so difficult after all.

I think that the K20 has a few pixels more than would be ideal and that made me hesitate. However, so far I am very satisfied with the results.

Cheers,

Well done John (especially as you had to redo a lot of it) and thanks for the constructive criticism.

Prieni It’s my feeling that we have half a boat too many here. The light, colour and composition are wonderful without it, so if I might dare to suggest cloning it out? Even with it in though Commended
How dare you?
Well, I have to admit I thought about that myself and then decided against it as it would be a substantial portion of the image that would be "fake". I did notice this flaw at the time of framing but there was no right angle to isolate just a pair of boats (they were standing in a long row).

Also we only had a short while on this beach as we were taking a tour round parts of the island of Sao Vicente (it was a business trip after all so there wasn't an awful lot of time for sightseeing).

Well, that's my excuse, anyway!

I'm very pleased with the winner you picked, cracking image! Congratulations Duncan!

Shot shortly after last weeks entry on the same beach. It was a business trip, honestly!
