Sean282, I've had a ticket in with Pentax since 8/2009 for this. It'd be nice if they did address it in firmware, not holding my breath though.

I think there are really 3 drivers. The general march of technology, consumer features and enthusiast features.

The general march of technology means better sensors, more FPS, more DR, higher usable ISO, quicker focusing end so on. That should apply across the board and the next few years will see models with incremental improvements in all those.

Primes for consumers were in 50 years ago, but nowadays it's zoom that sells more for mr. average surely? I think there's a differentiation to be made between features for advanced photographers and features for mr Jo public. ie the typical coloured Pentax buyer - that seems to be the demographic they're most concerned about. Hence I sadly personally expect more gimmicky stuff like panorama stitching, HDR blend modes, upload to FB, send image as email, video filters, different recognition modes and so on.

At a pinch, for more advanced users I suspect they'll develop stuff like spot histos in LV, adjustable horizons, ie better elaborations of things we already have. Focus bracketing is a feature that's dying to be made and might also be relevant for mr average so there's hope yet.

Hi, you can't buy Singh-Ray in the UK, you have to order from US (B&H or Singh-ray direct).

One bit of advice when ordering Lee, ask the shop if they actually have them there in stock. There can be long wait times because a part broke at the factory.

Formatt is another name for Hitech filters, word on the street is they're good individually but there is colour casting when stacked. They are the only company other than Singh-Ray to do a reverse GND.

B&W in Germany are a good source for ND110. They don't do sheet filters, they're screw-on. Pricey but good.

Yeah - don't know what I was thinking . That's what happens when you skim a thread and make a hurried reply just before leaving work. My bad, apologies.

Hello John,

I'm afraid you're wrong in this particular instance, it's perfectly possible for light to enter through the viewfinder in long exposures. It won't always and depends on brightness, angle etc but my advice would be that you do need to have the cap on for stuff like this. I do ND110 shots all the time.

Sean, do a simple test. Same shot, same conditions with and without the cap, see if there's a difference. If there is this is possibly the culprit. If not then either light is entering elsewhere or it's sensor banding.

As an aside, I don't bother with this forum anymore in protest. I don't know who it was on this forum that told me to give up photography and that I didn't deserve to be a photographer in some disgraceful photographer & terrorist thread which got out of hand and in which some of you went too far. It wasn't proper or pleasant, I wouldn't tolerate it at PF where I'm a mod myself.

Interesting answers so far.

I only ask because I was wondering about a K7, then saw the K5 spec sheet.

The price for the K5 seems high, even by Pentax standards, and as such I thought would deter people.

Nobody interested in a K7 at the reduced price it'll hit then?
Nope. not at all.

I have a K10 and K20. There was nothing in the K7 that made me wanna buy one. it still had the not so good high ISO performance and you still couldn't turn off the hideous dark frame. In fact one of the reasons I bought the K10D after The K20D was because I could have a body without it.

The K-5 has gone someway to addressing the dark frame crap by allowing it's disablement at speeds under 30s, and it also promises a much better high ISO performance. The promised improved AF is nothing to be sniffed at either.

I'm glad I didn't get a K-7

I shall get a K-5 when the price drops to below £800
Correction needed here. It is perfectly possible to disable the dark frame crap in the k-7 under 30 seconds. What the K-7 dark frame crap fuss is actually about is in bulb above 30 seconds. And according to people on the ground at photokina it is starting to look that you can turn that off in the K-5.

One interesting thing I picked up from the specs is that it looks like there is a switchable choice in the style of AF. We will choose between maximum accuracy, which is probably what we have now, and maximum speed, where presumably the camera won't mess about being too fussy.

The speed option may well appeal to some, especially if the DOF is more than enough to ensure a sharply focused image.
Good spot, I often get stopped from taking images by the K-7 because AF says it's still OOF. It sounds like this will ameliorate that. K-5 seems to be a good deal, it fixes some of my main issues with K-7.

3 Huge issues: No DFS, focus, 2-3 stops noise.
3 "Nice to haves": 5 user modes, programmable raw button, faster flash?
and 1 "what the hell will I do with this" Z-axis level

I'll get it but after Christmas when the price drops a little and just to avoid any early production issues (ie green line, have they fixed the alleged 1/60 shutter thing)
