That's 1.01 Lilly. Pedantic? Maybe.

. . . I wasn't even thinking of the lens mount area . . .
The weather sealed lenses have a neoprene seal around the lens mount which seals against the face of the body mount. This solution is pretty effective at keeping water, dust, etc. out of the body.

A serious suggestion to Pentax: Why not put that seal on the body? Then our old lenses would be weather sealed at that point too. At least the body would remain protected even if the lens was not fully protected. Just a thought.

TTL flashes are not supported by either the K10D or K20D. Only the earlier DSLR's, the *istD and (I think) the *istDS supported TTL flash. All of the DSLR's newer than the *istDS support only P-TTL automation as they lack the sensor required to measure the light reflected from the sensor.

Hi,

Just weighing up my options for a zoom in the 70-210 range. 99% of what I take has the camera tripod mounted and lens focussed manually so, af isn't really a necessity. Sharpness and good contrast however is.
The Pentax 70-210, on price, seems good value but how does it perform ? it would be used on a K10D. A pointer to some examples would be useful.

Many thanks

Martin
I have a fine example of the SMC Pentax-A 70-210 1:4 Macro (constant aperture) lens for sale. Follow the link in my post here to see images of the lens. I'm bringing it back to UK (Buckinghamshire) next Friday if you are interested or want to see photos taken with the lens, PM me.

Hello,

I have just purchased a used K10D which is missing the rubber "bung" from the baseplate where the motordrive fits in. Does anyone know if replacements are available and if so from where ?

Many thanks

Martin.
When the battery grip is fitted, that bung is removed and stored in the grip. That's probably where it still is. You could contact the seller to see if they still have it.

These windows often come unstuck. I've had two lenses suffer the same fate. Glueing them back in seems a perfectly acceptable remedy to me as it helps keep dust out, even if some surplus adhesive is visible.

I have one power zoom lens and I don't use that function so it's not a deal breaker for me. I'm just a little surprised it wasn't remedied during it's service.

The paint job on these lenses is appalling, no fault of the user. I have a 28-200mm lens with similar damage to its hood, caused only by rubbing as it was moved in and out of it's ER case by a previous owner.

None of these 'defects' affects the image quality in any way. I'd say the price was about right. I'll not be buying it only because I have DA* lenses covering that range, but if I wanted a full frame lens for a future FF DSLR body . . . . it'd be ideal.

Prieni, I probably didn't explain exactly what I meant either. In some parts of your image the banding is exactly as you described, alternate light and dark lines. The part of the pic that made me question that description slightly is the bit I pointed out where that stone seems to have parts of the darker area above it mixed in along its top left edge giving it a castellated look. It's that that made me suspect the SR maybe wasn't stabilized, which seems to have been the case. Whether that is the only cause of the banding remains to be seen.

I don't know why it would cause the banding either except that the SR system might generate this kind of noise if it is still trying to stabilize when the image is exposed. Certainly the castellated effect might be due to the sensor being in motion at the time the shutter is released.

I'm not sufficiently knowledgeable about the way images are taken from the sensor. If it works in a similar way to a TV display which is interlaced (all odd lines followed by all even lines), by the time all odd lines are captured, the sensor could have moved before the even lines are captured. If it's not stabilized, it will not have 'locked on' to the image and could end up anywhere.

I think Pentax should issue a firmware update for all SR equipped bodies. If SR is on, give us the option to delay shutter release until SR has stabilized. They have done it with AF, so why not SR?

Keep us informed of your findings.

Both Sigma and Metz make Pentax DSLR compatible flashes. I prefer the real deal.
