I'd not expect to get more than £30 on ebay for it as a package. Split it into body and lens, preferably with original caps, and you might make £50 if you were lucky.

Or do I sacrifice a film and see what happens?
You don't need to sacrifice a film. Just set the body to a long shutter speed, preferably 'B', press the shutter and watch what the iris does.

If you can't set the aperture on a P30 body (I have no experience of that model), you'll end up with the exposure being taken at one of the extremes of the lens's aperture range because the lens has no aperture ring.

Personally, I wouldn't waste my time on it other than out of curiosity. It's never going to be a useable combination.

Vignetting. as expected. The lens can only be used sensibly on a body that is able to select the aperture on the body. The 'flagship' MZ-S . . . can't use it, but the MZ-6 (and others) can.

You could wrap white paper or cloth around the lens to remove the 'pupil' effect. Better still, use a longer focal length lens and step back a bit.

Danny, £159 at SRS for the FA 50mm. £250 is way OTT. Great lens.

Thanks for your responses. In reality, there is no upper price limit, but at my age s/h is the more sensible option. Have been advised that the Tamron 70/210 F3.5 19ah model cf is the very best but this is only one opinion. Concerned lest I should pick up a lens that is known to be less than OK. Still prefer to go to 300/310. There is one on EBay that is 70/260 but know nothing of its pedigree. I need a little hand hold here , please. regards Ron.
Extending your range by only 10mm seems daft, no matter how good the lens is. it might replace one or two of your lenses but doesn't achieve your goal of longer reach. The SMCP-DA 55-300mm is a very good lens and it'll extend your effective range to 450mm (300 X 1.5 crop factor = 450). ( to Nathan)

The best Pentax lens at 300mm is the DA* 300mm as others have said. If it's in budget, go for it, you'll not be disappointed.

The AF500FTZ , a very powerful and versatile flash can be had quite cheaply, and has variable output. A manual for your AF260SA can be found here.

The AF500FTZ is a TTL, auto, or manual flash but TTL is supported only on *istD and *istDS bodies. It's manual or auto only on later DSLR bodies.

Another AF500FTZ here.
