Recently I re-took a photo that I had taken many years before.

The original was taken using a Nikon FA + Tamron 24mm on HP5.

I have the original print but no scanner so cannot show it.

The retake images below are almost straight out of the camera and then processed to look more like the original.

I like the fact that there is detail in the shadow areas.

But I do prefer the starkness that perhaps looks over processed in the digital age but more reflects the style from my film days.

What do others think??

I can't comment on the Sigma but I did buy the Tammy 10-24 18 months ago!

I have hardly used it.

I bought a DA15 two weeks ago, it has not been off my camera since.

There is nothing wrong with the Tamron, it is sharp enough and gives the massive FOV that 10mm affords = all in all a fantastic wide zoom.

However it is big, plastic, and a zoom, so you can vary the composition by zooming in and out etc.

The DA15, is for me easier to use. I can point the camera and if I like what I see I can click. I can't zoom in and out and wonder which zoom setting is best to change the view I have to move my own a**. The prime reason I prefer my wide prime over my wide zoom is because it is a prime and it makes me think more and suits my style of photography!

Just last night.....

My advice - If you are thinking about the DA15 - Get it! If you don't you will always be casting a sideways glance at the DA15!

Any of the superwide zooms are great lenses, and at 8mm!, but what they are not is a Pentax DA 15mm f4 ED AL Limited.

After all that rambling - When I walked into SRS 18 months ago I could have saved myself the cost of the superwide zoom (which is now in a drawer) if I'd have just got he DA15 in the first place!

If you want to use a freeware studio then look no further than FastStone Image viewer.

I use it ato process PEF files from my K7 at work. It is pretty good for a freebie.

Having recently bought a DA15mm, and if I was thinking to replace my tammy 24mm, I would be considering the DA21mm.

A little wider and not as fast as 1.8 or even 2.5 (on the tammy) but for 50 quid more than the Sigma you'd have a lens you'd never question the value of.

So far I am happy with the results, and impressed by the handling of this little lens

Buying a prime lens will change the way that you use your camera.

And, from what I have read the bargain of the moment is the 35mm f2.4.

I have recently re-discovered prime lenses and with a single prime lens on your camera you will see the world through that lens and have to adjust your physical position to get your shot rather than trying to adjust your zoom to fit the the scene and, you are forced to think more about the composition.

I can cover 10-300mm in zooms but get most enjoyment using 15, 24 and 90mm primes.

I'd say buy the 35mm f2.4. I will when LBA once again strikes.

John,

That would be the obvious choice, and I will be doing that, probably all night!, however, I am also looking forward to seeing those that I have yet to take and those taken just recently and yet to be viewed...

Well not quite.

I have however been given a new PC with a Dell Ultrasharp monitor at work.

I have now looked at some of the photographs that I have produced on this monitor.

I had never before realised just how important a decent monitor is. Its obvious of course but low on the list of my priorities.

I have been using my little netbook acer for my photo development for years.

Tonight I have mugged my kids for their hi-ish specked HP laptop.

They are happy with the portability, ease of used access to facebot or whatever, and I am seeing the output from my K7 for the first time!

Not quite the Dell Ultrasharp (and I amd sure there are much better)

But

Win win all round for me.

and my eyes feel clean.
