Entries submitted as RAW files, batch processed by the judge at default ACR settings.

Elements is a pixel editor and lightroom an raw converter, 2 very different things. "
So when you make changes however big or small in Lightroom what is it you are changing / editing if it's not pixels ?
Anvh......."If you want to adjust the brightness, contrast, whitebalance and make your photos black and white, add some vignetting effects and add some noise to make them look old or... clean up all the photo defects by removing noise and dust on the photo then programs like ligtroom are designed to do specficly that.
Elements can also do that but if you need to do that with more then 10 photos then i'm 100% sure lightroom is a better investment. "
What was elements designed for then ? The clue might be in the name I guess " Photoshop Elements"
I may be wrong but I believe elements has a many more tools than lightroom for doing these jobs.
I have certainly edited more than 10 images in elements and have no desire to change to Lightroom yet, or are you referring to batch processing. We don't all shoot like that, ie having dozens of nearer identical images that can be processed as one.

Pentax (or certain other related brands) and can pop out locally and press the shutter release before the end of July. Everyone has to go out and take a fresh picture for this as old images are not eligible.
This means pictures must be taken during the month of the competition.
In this case.............. JULY 2013.
How many out of date will there be this month
All the best...... Jim.

Thanks for that , it seems that feature suits your style of working. As a newcomer to all this and still several steps below an amateur , I can't see that I will be needing to batch process my images yet, although if ever I feel I need to then I know Lightroom is the way to go.
Beside this useful batch processing feature, I am sure there are other things Lightroom can do that elements can't and vice versa. But for now I am happy with elements , it does contain an awful lot features that I have never touched and a lot I expect I will never use, so I agree for some it may be a bit over complicated , but for now it does the job.
Of course when Nigel has completed his MKii/s comparison perhaps he could do a thorough comparison on elements v Lightroom
Just kidding Nigel
And also well done on all your work with these comparisons Nigel very good indeed.
All the best..... Jim.

Can you select, for example, a hundred shots and apply the same edits to them simultaneously with one slider movement?
As Nigel says probably not. Although I have to say I personally have yet to come across a situation where I would want to.
I am not gonna get into a debate about what Lightroom can do that elements can't and vice versa as they are both very different yet very capable program's , all I was pointing out is that elements is capable of organising and cataloguing images just as Lightroom does.
All the best ..... Jim.

Ta both - I'll see if I can get a demo of Lightroom, I think I need something to help with the management and workflow above Elements. I'll give both a go, however.
Has anyone tried any open source equivalents, such as Darktable? I'd need to install linux which is a bit of a drag, so keen to hear if anyone has used it and what they thought.

Completely disagree. Plenty enough DR in a K-5.
HDR to me suits certain images better than others, buildings, cars, church interiors etc. can look good sometimes, but trees, grass, etc. seldom look good to my eye anyway.
I also think that some feel for an image to be classed as "ok" or "good" or "great" or "fantastic" and so on, that it has to be technically perfect, this is such a shame to me as it seems some folk are so bogged down looking at the technical aspects of their images they forget to just look at the picture.
Just my thoughts on this sunny avo,
By the way I think it's a perfectly nice image and would love to see it as is.

I think John was suggesting this as a new comp for his local camera club and not the PU Forum.... at least I hope so, we have a weekly and a monthly comp with extremely simple rules and yet........
