I can't vouch for the 12-24 for want of personal experience. However the 50-135 is excellent, as are the FA31, DA 40 and DA 70 primes.

Go onto one of the photo-sharing sites that use databases to sort their images by camera and by lens, and do a search on that lens. Have a look at what can be achieved with it in the real world of taking pictures. Do the same for any other lenses that interest you. I know pbase use such a system, and while it is not perfect, it's a place to start.

It might be something as stupid as having a floppy disc drive which it tests to see if there is a disc in. Mike
Should be able to turn off the feature in BIOS that tells the PC there is a floppy drive in the system or not. That way, it will never waste time searching for it, at boot-up or any other point.
