Tim,

With the 500 mm lens, you can stay safely away from the subject and still get a shot in! (Even further away with the 1.7x TC)

Although with the Tammy at f8 wide open, you'd be looking at some fairly good light to get the shutter speed up to a respectable number...

Most excellent judging Hyram, great detailed comments
I also wanted to say how much I liked i-Berg's and Aiki's entries, my joint favorites of all the entries.
Hear, hear re Hyram's comprehensive efforts.

And thank you Tim. Your table is indeed a classic icon also. I agree with you re Aiki's entry too, but then they're all good - a quality field all round.

David - Congratulations! I was thinking you would get this one for sheer bravery!

Thank you to Hyram, not least for my mention, but for the effort put into meaningful, thoughtful judging.

And well done to all that placed and all that entered.

To be honest, when I took it (one of a series in the quarry) it really didn't stand out - you know, the way sometimes you're just certain a shot is going to work. This was almost a record shot to go with all the close-ups I took. I was really looking to show decayed buildings being reclaimed by nature as a contrast. It only came to life on the screen - just goes to show.

Andrew,

It certainly does! Always good to wait until you see it on the 'big screen', before making a decision about the relative merits of an image.
Certainly glad you hung on to this one, as you say.

Those 'for the record' shots are likely to be the very ones that are worth looking at, almost by definition I suppose - if they are composed well, and you've got the light in your favour, you get the result. Precisely what happened here!

Andrew,

I had a quick edit of these in LR3.

With sepia tones

With vignetting on BW

I managed to keep most of the sky from blowing out, but there's a fair amount of underexposure around the Fordsons. You could probably recover it, but at the expense of noise. Perhaps the blocked up shadows are not necessarily too bad in this context, in any event?

Kris,

One of the better sunsets anyone is likely to see and capture! Superb.

Andrew,

They both work in their own way - each has its own strengths. I just think it was a good shot to start with.

Andrew,

Well observed and well composed. I sense it would come up very effectively in BW also...

Huw,

I think the series captured the bleakness of the day really well. It's interesting in that the cross-blue filter you used later on one of the images actually makes me think of some of the lighting conditions I've experienced here in Oz - it's still subtle enough to be very realistic.
