I just wondered about why you shoot on JPEG rather than RAW? Also when you're taking candid shots at the reception (first dance etc), how often do you have to revert to Flash rather than push the ISO etc?

Nice shot Snappy, I like the detail in the crowd the fact that you can see where the fireworks are launched from and also the glow of the city in the background.

I'd be tempted to create a square crop to loose the left hand 25% of the pic to see what it looks like, you still retain the crowd, launch site and city lights but just loose the bright light which draws the eye.

I "get" what you're saying, the k-5 is of course a much better camera under more difficult conditions and some of the shots I've had out of it at 3200 ISO and higher are amazing. I also "get" that the FA50mm will be loads better when it's wider open.

But even under controlled lighting conditions at f8 I would have expected to see the benefit of a higher resolution sensor, and significantly better glass. Its sort of like saying if you drive an BMW 1 series and BMW 7 series at 60 MPH on a smooth road the ride quality will be the same.

Just expected a bigger difference, wish I'd taken my K100Super now for a further test lol

Hi Everyone

I recently had an interesting weekend and had the opportunity to be part of a model shoot. In fact my girlfriend also joined me and we both had a great day. Cath is new to the Pentax world and also new to DSLR photography, she's inherited my old K200D as I've now upgraded to a K-5.

Below are a couple of sample shots we both took, pretty much one after the other. All the lighting was exactly the same, both cameras were set to the same settings (ISO 200, F8.0, 125) and we were using a radio flash trigger to fire the studio lights. Now, I was using the K-5 and the FA50 1.4mm and Cath was using the K200D with 18-55mm Kit Lens. Given that my set up is newer, more expensive, better quality with better glass I cant really see a massive difference between the quality of the two shots. To be fair, I slightly prefer the K200d !!

All the images are exported from Lightroom and the only adjustments I've made are to adjust WB to be the same and crop.

This was my first real outing with my new Sigma 10-20mm, not really traditional subject matter for such a lens but having the wide field of view was very useful. It was bit to busy to take a tripod and wasn't really there for photographic reasons so had to make do with a monopod.

They were taken at Hull Fair in East Yorkshire. It's the largest traveling fair in Europe and is firmly routed in my childhood memories, my mum and dad used to take me every year so I'm trying to do the same with my kids, despite the fact the live in St Albans lol. For those that know it, the evening was finished with a Patie n' Chips from Bob Carvers and bag of Wrights Brandy Snap.

I've been asked for some camera advice by a friend who's just about to go live in Australia for 6 months. She wants to buy a decent P&S camera to record her adventures and send images back to her parents etc. She has a budget of around £200.

I was wondering about recommending the new Pentax x-5, as it seems like good value for £200 giving her a great optical zoom and decent features, she seems quite open to having a bridge camera rather than a compact type camera. IQ, is her primary motivation.

Just wondered if anyone has any other recommendations at that price point, it's not a market I know well !
