The original (2.5, not 2.8 ) design went to 1:2 and Tamron sold an optional extension tube kit to take it to 1:1 if desired - I'm guessing this is the one Clarky's got from his description above.

I doubt you'll see any difference in quality as all macros tend to be superb performers, however, the DFA will go down to 1:1 magnification so I'm looking forward to seeing bugs at twice the size you're getting from the Tamron!

I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on the Tamron and the DFA back-to-back, I spent an age looking at pictures taken with both online and handling them in the shop (Nikon fit Tamron unfortunately) before plumping for the DFA, mainly for its light weight and the general ergonomics (I love quick shift!). Be nice to know if I made the right choice or not - although I'm unlikely to change now!

I've not had any spiders yet this year but I'm hoping to see some soon as the weather warms up a bit - this one of yours is a very handsome chap!

I think you should clarify that the longest side should be no longer than 800 as portrait mode would still end up being very large.
I thought it would make sense to restrict the longest side to 800px, but as long as we all follow the same rule then I personally have no problem with it being just the width that's restricted. Others might though, so this is as good as opportunity as any for all to say their piece...

I have made some alterations to the Competitions thread, bearing in mind all the comments made.

There is now an Announcement with the general rules & guidance. The current week only is a Sticky.

In addition to the 800 pixel rule I have added one that an image should be posted and then left unchanged. It seemed potentially unfair if someone kept changing an image in the light of other entries posted. So one shot only at it.

The exception to that is that if an image is deleted because it's disqualified then it can be corrected and re-posted.

Has anything been missed out or is that about right?
Much tidier!

I think everything was covered nicely there and I'm quite happy about sticking to one entry (which I think most folks did anyway but doesn't hurt to have written down). Thanks for sorting it out.

I confess I don't remember why 800 was agreed upon (seems such a long time ago! ) but I think it makes sense as it's the maximum size for submissions to the Pentax Photo Gallery and it's also the maximum size for most of the (free) image hosting accounts that people link to.

There's little advantage to posting huge pictures because they can't be viewed properly....

800 pixels wide it is then, and I'll post a reminder of that in the next competition thread. Anyone who posts wider, will be deleted, maximum delete....

Hussah!

Actually John, while you're at it, do all the threads in the competitions forum need to be sticky? It made sense when they shared space in this general forum but I think the current ones will always float to at (or near) the top in the other place. Instead there could just be a single sticky thread with the 2 rules we've agreed on so far (800px size, must be your own work) so newcomers to these forums will have something immediately at hand to refer to.

Just a thought.

After reading this thread I looked again at the competition entries... couldn't see anything problematic... f11 is a useful key to press... not on your camera... your PC
Viewing the pictures isn't a problem for me - I have a nice wide screen.

The problem is that there was an agreement to limit the size of pictures entered, some of us have kept to this and it is to our detriment when others ignore it. If we're not going to keep the limit then I say bring it on! I'll be posting 3872x2592's from now on in and you can revel in the luxuriant detail they bring...

Out of interest, have we now given up on the agreement not to post competition entries longer than 800 pixels on a side? Sizes seem to be creeping up lately and about half this week's entries are greater than this length.

It does rather put those of us who were keeping to the rule at a bit of a disadvantage, so can we decide amongst ourselves if we're keeping to this agreement or not please?

For the record, I vote that the 800px limit stays.

I assumed that the name pre-flash was suggesting that it took place prior to the main flash - I was wrong!

In my mind I imagined that the last of the pre-flashes would communicate something along the lines of, "I'm going to open the shutter in x-milliseconds so do your stuff then". The remote would then wait that designated length of time and fire in sync with the shutter, but obviously these systems aren't as smart as I was giving them credit for. Oh well, I suppose there's no real material effect on the picture so I won't be losing sleep over it.
