The Tamron is very good when used with care.
Is it still manufactured? Can't find anything new online.
No. The only mirror lens still in production from one of the majors is Sony's one for the Minolta/Alpha mount. There are some cheap no-name ones available (which John refers to above), normally around £70 and horrible quality. If you want a half-decent one you'll have to go second-hand unfortunately.

BBC4. High production values but everyone ignores it anyway...

I've worked with continuous lighting set-ups before and, while it can be cheap to buy into initially, it does give off a *lot* of heat after comparatively short spells of time. If you're working in less than perfectly ventilated conditions this can become very uncomfortable very quickly.

I'd probably go with a small studio flash kit personally, not a lot more money but much better for your health!

I paid £45 for a 16mb CF card for my first digicam - a Kodak DCS215 Zoom (one of the first to offer a whole megapixel!). Still have both card and camera

I really like the first one of the rays coming through the tents, great composition

A bit early for Summer Solstice though isn't it? I know we're in June now but there's three weekends 'til the 21st...

Wide angle lenses (like the focal lengths your 18-55 covers) tend to have petal shaped hoods, telephoto lenses tend to have simpler cone shaped hoods. As the 50mm is neither wide nor telephoto (just "normal") then I reckon you could get away with pretty much anything. Added benefits of a rigid hood include damage protection for the front of the lens and improved contrast due to the shading from intense light sources.

Add to all this the fact you can get generic ones new for well under a fiver and it's hard to see where you could go wrong!

...or (brainwave) a big hood! The front element doesn't rotate so holding onto it won't effect operation, just make sure you get a rigid one (like the one on your 18-55) and not one of the rubber ones - any with a 49mm filter thread attachment would do, it doesn't have to be specifically for Pentax.
