There are some cheap and arather dire 500mm mirror lenses, but as far as I know you should be OK with Tamron, Vivitar, Pentax for longer ones of course but expensive, Tokina and possibly others.
Avoid the ones that used to sell new for £100.00

John, thanks for your comments. Regarding teleconvertors, I read that they are not suitable for zoom lenses from less than 70mm. If I were to use my 28-300 Sigma but stay above ~70mm would that be OK? Check this and this.
I'd say the Tamron is your best option, they are more plentiful than any other (Vivitar, Tokina, pentax or Sigma). You can get them for £70-£180 (most are £100 somthing), gc to minty in a kit with filters and case.
I'm pretty sure, that in optimal conditions, the results will be better than the Sigma+TC.

Are you saying that Imax use Tamron lenses?
I used to part-own and run a six screen cinema and a good projection lens was a vital element

Have a Centron 500mm f8 reflector that bought off ebay a couple of months ago - also apparantly does macro as well.......
Took some shots of the moon with it, but haven't really tried it out on much else to be honest...... bit of an impulse buy, probably going to sell it soon.........

I think 500 is just a little too tight for the Imax screen

Sorry, but wouldn't go anywhere near anything made by Centon

Russian Mirror lenses are usually very high quality, they invented them, Rubinars 500/6.3, 500/8 can be got for reasonable prices on ebay, there are also MTO 500 and 1000. I own a 3M-5A 500/8 and have had some good results from it

Or, would a teleconverter with my Sigma 28-300 be a better idea?
