Body, lens, battery and a software CD I'd imagine - probably a strap too but I wouldn't push it.

As John's said, the 645 isn't a "system" camera so there's no need for the additional back used in other DMF systems. Professionals will probably view that as "a bad thing", but that's what will keep the costs down for us amateurs. The only comparable camera will be the Leica S2 and it seems the cost of manufacturing red dots to stick on the front is as high as it ever was, hence expect Pentax levels of flexibility at higher-than-Hasselblad prices.

Interesting there's no mention there of the M4/3 cameras (Oly EP1 & Panny GF1). I realise they're harder to categorise but the people buying them are surely people who would have otherwise bought a DSLR but were put off by the bulk?

As these hybrid/EVIL/whatever cameras seem to be the future (whether a good thing or not is another discussion) I'd suggest that the EP1 and the GF1 were far more important releases in 2009 than *any* of the cameras in your list.

I'd also argue that the most desirable camera of 2009 was the Leica M9 - again not a DSLR so hard to categorise but it is competing directly for the hearts and wallets of DSLR buyers. Rangefinder handling may not be to everybody's taste but there's no arguing with the results it's capable of in the right hands!

Just my thoughts anyway.

I fail to see how some here would be buying into digital medium format if Pentax release the camera when they can do it now, although with a different brand.
I don't think it has very much at all to do with brand loyalty (and as a user of Pentax, Zeiss, Leica, Voigtlander, Rollei, Ricoh, Contax, Mamiya, Minolta, Praktica, Olympus and Zenit cameras I certainly don't have any to speak of) but has everything to do with economics.

I'd love to do DMF but currently the cheapest way in still requires an outlay of £12k+ at a bare minimum. Not being a professional there's no way I could justify such spending, hence I shoot 120 film instead (not on a Pentax though).

Now if Pentax were to make a basic DMF kit available for £6k (which is where rumours would have us believe the 645D is pitched) then the whole justification process becomes much easier. Still not easy, but easier...

Frankly I couldn't care less which manufacturer brings a "budget" DMF camera to market first - I'd have had the same interest if it'd been Seagull, Casio or Fisher Price; the fact that it happens to be Pentax who are going to be first is just a nice added bonus.

Don't know - but I've got a nice one going spare if you want to try it out? I can stick it in the post and you can either send it back or make me an offer for it if you want to keep it.

I'd imagine Samsung would make both cameras and lenses in-house, they certainly have the expertise from their digicam ranges so it's not a completely new area for them. I know a couple of people who own Samsung P&S cameras and they seem very impressed with them - these are non-photographers who view Samsung, Panasonic and Sony as the "big brands" but have never heard of Pentax, Nikon, Leica or Olympus and only know Canon as people who make printers. That's the market that Samsung should have aimed for from the start IMHO and left Pentax to concentrate on old school photographers. Oh well, it wasn't to be...

I could even see some "pocket" APS cameras with built in zoom (or even prime) lenses. Pentax were very strong in the film era with their excellent ESPIO models, I could see the same pattern happening if sales grow rapidly in this area.
Me too - it's an area I intend to buy into before 2010 is out myself. At the moment it's looking like a Sigma DP2 (I can't justify the price of a Leica X1 for what it is) but if Pentax pull their finger out then I'd happily buy whatever they have to offer! I'd rather a nice fast (f/2.4 or better) prime to a medium-slow zoom I have to admit, but more importantly I want something that's truly pocketable with a decent size sensor - even the DP2/X1 are a little on the lardy side as far as I'm concerned.

I don't suppose one of them happens to be a Voigtlander Bessa II that's desperately seeking a new home by any chance?
