The Benjamin Kanarek Blog 2009 Camera Awards

Well, being that everyone is doing it, I thought I would put in my two cents worth.

Here are my choices for Camera's of the year and there standing…I won't go in to the why's unless you ask.

Just one point of clarification, I am no longer affiliated with any brand and thus there is no commercial bias.

My Favorite Full Frame DSLR's are the following:

1. Sony Alpha 850
2. Nikon D3X
3. Canon 5D Mkll
4. Canon 1Ds Mklll
5. Sony Alpha 900

My Favorite High End APS-C DSLR's are the following:

1. Canon 7D
2. Pentax K7
3. Nikon D300s
4. Sony Alpha 550

My Favorite Entry Level DSLR's are the following:

1. Pentax K-x

2. Canon 500D
3. Nikon D5000

There you have it. Would love to hear your feedback.

Ben

They seem very reasonable choices.

Interesting there's no mention there of the M4/3 cameras (Oly EP1 & Panny GF1). I realise they're harder to categorise but the people buying them are surely people who would have otherwise bought a DSLR but were put off by the bulk?

As these hybrid/EVIL/whatever cameras seem to be the future (whether a good thing or not is another discussion) I'd suggest that the EP1 and the GF1 were far more important releases in 2009 than *any* of the cameras in your list.

I'd also argue that the most desirable camera of 2009 was the Leica M9 - again not a DSLR so hard to categorise but it is competing directly for the hearts and wallets of DSLR buyers. Rangefinder handling may not be to everybody's taste but there's no arguing with the results it's capable of in the right hands!

Just my thoughts anyway.

Interestingly I was reading The Online Photographer's camera of the year post yesterday where they asked 8 of their writers to pick one camera, and 4/3 cameras got several votes. The Pentax K-x got one. No Canons or Nikons made the list

No Nikon D700?

I have seen quite a few Canon shooters on other forums jump ship for that.
No equipment list here but thanks for taking an interest. My Flickr

Well I wondered if that was the case but the 5D MKII was released very late 2008 wasn't it?

(and the A900)

I think you may be right. Therefore Benjamin's Awards are a sham! Let us pelt him with rotten eggs forthwith.

Interesting choices there Ben.

I can't argue with the K-x, as even the perennial Pentax knockers - DPReview - rate this camera as the best entry level model.

With APS-C Is the 7D that good? A friend of mine sold all his D300 kit and bought a 7D to complement his 5D mk2, so that would suggest it is mighty. The K-7 is a fine unit and I will get one soon. The D300s, does have something that I love and that is its 51AF points and 3D tracking, which personally I think is the best AF around at the moment. In the end I suppose there is nothing in it between the 7D, D300s and K-7.

Now to FF, Sony A850? I have read and seen results with this camera and the High ISO performance is not as good as Nikon and Canon rivals. However it is good value and for studio work I suppose there is nothing in it between this and the Nikon D3x and Canon 1Ds mk3.

Have you tried any 4/3rds cameras? If I chose my list, then the Penasonic GF1 would get my vote.
