Thanks Alan - she really enjoyed herself and that's what matters no matter how the shots turned out. She can't wait to go again so one afternoon this week we'll hire a boat and try to get closer to that egret colony !

Excellent set Alan ! Love the puffin shots - all very interesting. That is some amazing flare in #1 - pity the sun lit the bird so strongly because the framing and subject were spot on. #! & 2 and the puffin portrait stand out for me.

Although now 23 and an avid P&S / mobile phone shooter, this is the first time she's been shooting with a DSLR. I gave her my spare K5 and put the 55-300 lens on it for her (I had a K5 with DA*300) and we went looking for people, macro@300 and birds in the local park.

Yes I think you may need something longer than 55mm for that

The K5 is a superb camera, you'll love it. Lots of 'good fellas' on here willing to help out with tips and answers to queries. Have fun, shoot lots !

Welcome azcry - you have bought an excellent camera and although there is a steep learning curve with DSLRs you will find a lot of of interest here and help too when you ask for it.
Most important thing to do is a) read the manual from front to back and then read it again b) take lots of photos and learn from your mistakes and successes !

Cute ! That could be a lot of space in there - sure thing is larger birds / small mammals are not going to be able to get at those chicks !
