2. I post series (rarely a single shot) onto forums.
3. I create photo-books for my family and friends and as presents.
4. I sell a few (nowhere near as many as I'd like) !
5. I enter a few competitions.
6. I keep triple copies of everything I decide to keep.

That isn't the case in other monthly comps that I enter.
1. do they attract a good number of entries?
2. how are they run?
Winner picks a monthly subject, voting by all members not just participants, in the event of a tie the 'convener' selects the winner, very simple and off you go. You can make these as simple as you like or as convoluted as you want, I believe the former attracts more entrants but both work !

I am not convinced that going monthly will help, because as has been previously pointed out, there will still be a tendency to wait until the last week before posting.

There may be other sites or areas of PU that give feedback on a particular image. That could be feedback on what is just a lucky shot. Feedback when the photograph is intended to meet a specific criteria is more targeted and therefore, IMHO, more useful.

Who is this 'someone else' supposed to be? This rule doesn't seem to deter people from entering the weekly competitions which frequently have up to around 40 entries.

More likely than not, the judge will pontificate (especially with people's expectations/encouragement), but I see no issue if they choose to keep schtum. Folks who crave feedback can request it in the unlikely event of the judge just judging.
If folks want status quo and to keep things they way they have always been done, not a problem, but the trajectory seems quite downward.

The reason I enter is for the feedback. I'm trying to improve my photography, not win the non-existent prize. I'd appreciate feedback from anyone whose picture, in anyone's else's opinion, is more worthy than mine. A short polite helpful sentence would be enough. If I didn't get any feedback then I wouldn't bother to enter that individual's comps again. Also I don't always agree with the judge's choice but I do respect that their opinion is the one that counts. Surely its only fair that winners should take their turn at judging and commenting.
I do like to read the judges's comments, however I don't think it is necessary to comment on every entry, only on their 1,2,3. If they choose to comment on every entry then that's great .. but it shouldn't be an imperative.

Thank God for zoos. The Madagascans have eaten almost all the lemurs in the wild.
Great pictures, Froggy.

In addition to picking the next topic the winner must also judge the next competition, and include comments on each of the entries. Those not willing or able to do this should think twice before entering. This golden rule also applies to the weekly competition.

Question, if you crop a picture what program do you use and do you maintain the aspect ratio, or just crop to what looks good?
A pro told me, "shoot wider than you need and crop to whatever suits the shot you pictured" and that is the law that in most shoots I live by. I have just had a bunch of shots printed at all sorts of weird sizes from 30x10, 22 x 18, 16x8 and so on, definitely not your standard sizes. When framed though it makes no difference. However mostly you will be cropping of the internet so it doesn't matter one iota what your crop ratio !
