Yes, the 50mm f/1.4 is a mystery. It must be the longest serving discontinued product ever. They must have made more batches, it's just too long to simply be finding more stock.
There have even been batches of the A series 50mm f/1.2 reported, but only in Japan.
Not sure the current AF system could cope at 1.2 though

Indeed we do John and I think people often forget this. A small bird is constantly moving its head even if it appears still. Another reason why we tend to use burst mode. Back to the notion of a heavy f2,8 300mm - provided the f4 focuses well with a TC isn't F4 the new F2.8 with the current improvements in noise levels of at least one stop ISO equivalent esp. for birds? (Disregarding DOF which could be too narrow a lot of the time at F2.8

Canon have a small sensor just for you.
202mm x 205mm 488megapixels, try and get that camera in the boot of your ford fiesta.

If you want to capture images of a black cat down a mine shaft, and need good noise at high iso, paying a grand for a K3 when you have a K5 appears silly.
IMHO you are going to have to pay for a high end FF to get much better than a K5.
The K3 appears to be a very good camera, but it is not for people like Smeggy.
I can`t see any maker throwing the money or R&d time at a £1000 camera to make the huge improvement people appear to wont or need, as they probably account for less than 1% of the buying public.
I think we are back to the Pentax FF again.
£4000 any body.
