I think I know the answer to this but I thought that it would be safe to check first. I have a K5 and K10D and the AF360FGZ flash which seems to have an intermittent fault on both cameras in that it can under expose by 1 to 1.5 stops in PTTL mode, especially in rooms brightly lit by daylight.

I have an AF240FT flash from my SFX days which would have the added advantage that being smaller, it would fit better in my current bag.

My question is, is it safe to use the AF240FT on these cameras? I know that it doesn't have PTTL and presumably the flash's TTL mode will not work. It does not have Auto, so would I be restricted to full manual similar to the days of flashbulbs? That dates me!

Thanks in anticipation.

Thank you everyone. I am more reassured.

That was an impressive piece of detective work, Mike!

Thank you both.

Mike - The chirp on turning on can be heard whether or not SR is turned on. I wonder if it is sensor cleaning after all.

It has been said today on the "Fed Up" thread that the sensor cleaning can be felt when setting it off manually in the menu. I can't feel or hear anything. Still a bit concerned. How can I be certain that it is working?

Thanks, Mike. Is it totally silent? I get a faint chirp when I turn the camera on whether or not it is set to do so in the menu. When I go into the menu and try to do it manully, I get the "Dust Removal" screen but total silence.

Travelled down to Park Cameras in Burgess Hill yesterday and collected a K5 to replace my K10D (super showroom and excellent service by the way).

It is looking good so far, however I have encountered a problem for which I would be grateful for your advice and experience please. The dust removal facility on the K10D vibrated the sensor and you can certainly hear and feel the vibration. The K5 brochure talks about "ultrasonic vibration" and appears to work in the same way. The only thing is when I try to use it on this camera, I can't hear or feel a thing.

Is this normal on the K5, am I am missing something obvious or do I have a problem?

Thanks

John

I was the subject of the article and my reaction to the caption was the same as yours. The aircraft was a Mirage and was photographed at the Biggin Hill Air Fair. All of the shots that I submited for the article carried the correct captions. The error was created by the magazine editors. They do not send you a draft, so you can imagine my feelings when I received the magazine!

Many thanks for your advice, everyone. I have also watched the Youtube video which, along with your help, has given me enough confidence to tackle the job.

After about two years of doing all I could to stop dust reaching my K10D's sensor, it has finally happened and I have a fairly sizeable mark that refuses to be shifted by vibrating the sensor. Amateur Photographer magazine has reviewed the Zeelon anti-static blower in its latest issue. It uses filters to prevent dust being sucked into the blower and hence then blown on to the sensor. The air is negatively charged to repel the dust from the positively charged sensor. Their conclusion is that it works well enough but is possibly over priced at £39.95.

I bought a Pentax digital SLR sensor cleaning kit two years ago but have never needed it until now.

I am a complete novice when it comes to sensor cleaning and it scares me to death!

Is a blower better (safer) than the cleaning kit? Has anyone tried the one above?
Would I be better off using the Pentax kit even though it it two years old?

Thanks,
John
