Following on from Ratcatcher's question about tripod heads, I have the following for sale, unwanted 'Star-Letter' prize for a letter I had published in Outdoor Photography magazine.

It's a lovely tripod, very tall and sturdy, with a nice way of getting the centre column horizontal, or even upside down if you wish. The head is also smooth, solid and easy to use. Only selling it as it's all brand new and boxed, I've only taken it out to look at and try out in the lounge, and in this condition (and considering the retail price) I should get more for it than if I sold my slightly battered Manfrotto. But I was sorely tempted, overall the Giottos a nicer tripod I think.

The Tripod is the MT-9371 model.

The head is this MH7302-720 Fluid Ball Head model, includes QR plate.

25% off W.E. price + postage if anyone's interested, PM me if you are.

Cheers,
Dan

I use this Manfrotto one and find it nice and sturdy.

I've also got a Giottos Fluid Ball Head spare if it takes your fancy, brand new (unwanted star-letter prize) - it's the MH7302-720 model.

But back to your original question, I like the Manfrotto head, serves me well with my 055ProB.

It doesn't rival Dans Hover fly capture, But it sure was tricky to snap him.
...wide open? I bet it was tricky! Depth of field is tiny so you've done brilliantly to get him as sharp as you have. I use flash and a smaller aperture, my technique is outlined here. Bear in mind my shots have been cropped too.

Keep it up, looking forward to your next efforts.

Galoot, nice pic, it's eggcellent!

Pschlute, nice pic, but I think it could do with some sharpening.

Jb, nice pic, but I think it looks a bit flat.

Don't forget that when you're looking at the image on a computer screen it's much more magnified than when you're looking in the viewfinder, so any softness is greatly magnified too.

Shooting through a curved sheet of glass is unfortunately not going to help at all - however perpendicular you are to it, light's going to be passing through the outermost regions of the glass at a greater angle, and diffraction is going to affect sharpness. Are the other two sides of the triangular tank curved? If not, try shooting through these if you can.

Well done Galoot, well deserved, and I like your original one just as much, if not more...

As far as your judging Prieni, and specifically about my photo, yes, I think I overdid my sharpening, as I thought that the plant looked a bit too hard once I'd finished. However, by then Galoot had already posted his shot and I knew it wasn't worth spending too much time on mine.

Well done all, look forward to the next one.
