Discovered the GXR

I always thought the GXR was an odd design and I wasn't really happy with the idea that the sensor size would vary with different lenses. That would surely lead to variable results across the lens range. It's good that manufacturers will try things though, and hopefully they weren't left too much...

Discovered the GXR

Yes, good to see innovation, even somewhat eccentric innovation. The real problem, entirely foreseeable, is that the sensors were always going to 'age' more rapidly than their attached lens. When the sensor is over the hill, a good lens inevitably follows it into the sunset rather than being avail...

Do You Zoom?

Yes, I agree. What I've found is, despite the obvious high quality of results, the usefulness of the GR is somewhat less than the usefulness of the MX-1 or the WG series. It's surprising what quality we can pull out of these smaller sensor cameras.

Do You Zoom?

You've got to be pretty lucky to find yourself standing in the right place to frame the scene as you want with a fixed lens. The obvious answer is to walk a few feet or rely on cropping later. Maybe I'm just getting lazy but a zoom seems the preferred option. Like others, I'm amazed by the result...

Do You Zoom?

There's an obvious attraction in a big sensor/fixed lens compact but I'd find not having a zoom far too restrictive. I know people like cameras such as the Fuji X100 for street photography but you sort of know what you're going to get in those circumstances. I use the two extremes of my MX-1 at t...

Do You Zoom?

Hi John As a family we replaced our compact camera which has 28-200 mm zoom in 35 equivelant. My wife uses it mostly, when I use it, I very rarely use the zoom, and checking my wifes pics she hardly ever uses the zoom, so I would say 90% of our pics are shot at 28mm. Like you I have had my eye on the...

I held it in my hands

Today I was invited to see the new Rico Pentax 645DZ. It was a demonstration held by the local Pentax agents C.R. Kennedy in Melbourne. It showed the new camera with 4 new lenses. There was also a fashion photographer including model. I have to say, the camera was very good looking, but th...

Ricoh WG-M1

Shamelessly copied from the USA forum, have to say that Ricoh could have actually got this one right ... cracking looking unit. At a depth of 10m waterproof performance continuously for one hour ( lens protector installed) - Drop impact performance from 2m - Dustproof equivalent of IP6X -...

Ricoh WG-M1

That one doesn't appeal to me at all for general use, but it could be that it's just the thing to use underwater. I would imagine it's aimed at the GoPro crowd and suchlike who are in a slightly different age group to the majority of Pentax/Ricoh users. Nope I think it's superb, and cannot wait to g...

Full frame rumour

I don't have much money, so a Pentax FF released today could possibly be mine in about 3 - 5 years time maybe? I've gravitated around Pentax for many years because, simply put, they were superior to anything the competition offered in my particular price bracket (Canon were especially rubbish in ...

Full frame rumour

Pentax will bring out a full frame camera. What we need is something like a slightly larger K3 with 24MP full frame sensor around the same price as the Nikon D610. If they do that they will clean up (vacuum cleaner or not)!

Full frame rumour

Algi, you've blown my cover ... That was my trolling name after my banning over there ... There was quite a rout over there after an explosion of prejudiced, old fashioned views were expressed about just who in the household should be responsible for the vacuuming. Richard, I do have some serious ...

Interview Ricoh's John Carlson (Pentax)

Isn't that just yet another smaller sensor (smaller than the 645) cramming more pixels on board ... why would that lead to comparable performance?

Interview Ricoh's John Carlson (Pentax)

Isn't that just yet another smaller sensor (smaller than the 645) cramming more pixels on board ... why would that lead to comparable performance? Sensors move on Nigel. Why is the K3 reputed to stand up fairly well against the current Canon 6D?

Interview Ricoh's John Carlson (Pentax)

I was thinking about the never-ending debate over 'the megapixel race', and the argument that the additional megapixels on the K3 had not lead to gains in certain areas of IQ, as compared to the K5II ... higher ISO noise and Dynamic Range performance are the ones mostly referred to. Could we ex...

Interview Ricoh's John Carlson (Pentax)

Its true, but the point about it being the photographer sidetracks the issue I feel. You could have Joe Cornish, David Noton etc etc going out with a compact camera, and you might reasonably expect very nice results ... but, ultimately, there will be very real limitations as to the application that ...

Interview Ricoh's John Carlson (Pentax)

I'm sure we've all seen stunning images from FF cameras, but then again we've all seen stunning images from compacts. It's still the photographer, not the camera, that makes the picture. Frankly speaking as a working photographer with a full battery of Pentax lenses and bodies as my main system and ...

Interview Ricoh's John Carlson (Pentax)

Low light ability tends to come from pixel size, or larger pixel light capture area. So a higher megapixel sensor is less likely to perform as well in low light as a lower mega pixel equivalent. A certain camera has been a game changer recently by pitching at a 12MP resolution, which is ideal fo...
